Y'know what one of the first huge things I remember learning after I had my son? I was at the doctor's office, and I don't even remember the subject, but he was telling me something contrary to what the books said. I quoted the book, and he looked at me and said, "I think that you will learn that books aren't always right. A lot of the authors don't even had kids. You're going to learn that what is right is what makes sense.
Eye opening. Here I spent 9+ months studying for an exam that I would flunk, no matter what, but would pass with flying colors in the real life test by my baby.
It's like what Dr. Spock always opened his books with: "You know more than you think you do." We all make it up as we go along...listening to others' experiences and taking from it what we want.
I think what is most important is we, here on this board, all want the best for our kids. I don't sense a lot of selfishness or damaging behaviors, for the most part. I think that's different from what a lot of us see elsewhere or have witnessed in the past. We care, and I think that is what our kids will remember.
