I'm doing it totally differently this time around. Last time I went cold turkey straight to underwear (except at night) and ds was trained in a week, but he was almost 3 and was ready to learn. This time around, ds started all on his own and we are doing it gradually. I put him in pullups around Christmas because the diapers were getting tight on him. To my surprise he started wanting to use the potty! I thought he was too young since he was a couple of months away from being 2 1/2 but I decided to go with it if he was interested.
Since we started using pullups, knock on wood, he has pooped in the potty EVERY single time and hasn't gone once in his pullup. He will stop whatever he is doing to tell me he has to poop. However, he doesn't tell me he has to pee, I guess because it isn't that uncomfortable to have a wet pullup. If I strip him down he will run to the potty and pee every time. If I ask him if he has to pee, sometimes he will say yes and do it and sometimes he will say no. I don't think he has that sensation down just yet.
He also will only use the big potty - he had absolutely no interest in the small one. We are down to 2 pullups a day (one in the AM and one after nap) and I would say about half the time he pees he does it in the potty. He holds it for longer now, so if I can catch him before he goes, he will stay dry for hours. Of course I still put one on him at night since he wakes up every morning wet. My other ds wore a pullup at night until he was 4 1/2. Once preschool is over and summer vacation starts, I am going to buckle down and make him wear underwear, but for now we are doing it slowly. I have no idea if this is a good way or not, but for now it's working for us! Oh - one more thing - he still can't pull his pants up and down by himself, which makes me think he really isn't ready to go with underwear all the time. Sorry I wrote a novel!
