Holidays are so fun to celebrate! I have a preschooler too, and I got a couple St.Patty's books at the library that we have been reading together, I also think we will make cookies and a special "green" dinner on the 17th. Last year I added a few drops of green food coloring to the mashed potatoes at dinner and to their milk in the morning and the kids loved it, then we had shamrock cookies for dessert.
Check out the Family Fun website too, they always have cute ideas and printable pages.

My oldest DS's birthday is on St. Patricks Day, we always have green food/drinks that day. We decorate our house with green crepe paper, my DD's cut out shamrocks and color them green. I always put green food coloring in the cake batter and homemade ice cream.

Every year we hide a black pot with some chocolate "gold" coins in it somewhere in our house. We have shamrock stickers and other clues that lead to it (it's been in a closet or in the oven of the kids' play kitchen). The kids think that a leprechaun brings it. What's neat is that we usually do it during the day, unlike Easter or Chrismas where they get to open their gift up in the morning. We usually pretend that we've seen or heard the Leprechaun before we get them looking for the pot.

In our area St Patrick's day is a big deal - so much fun! I remember my mom putting green food coloring in just about everything on St Patty's, and we made 'leprechaun hats' out of empty oatmeal drums and construction paper. Have fun!

Try and google St. Patrick's Day children's crafts for more ideas.

Instead of green beer that adults do what about green milk. Other green foods that popped into my mind were green jello, green vegetables, and green grapes.

I found this craft idea in the Feb/Mar 2008 The Mailbox magazine.

Shamrocks: Get a green bell pepper with 3 lobes. Cut the pepper in half horizonatally and remove the seeds. Fill a shallow container with green paint. Press the pepper half into the paint and then press pepper onto a sheet of white construction paper to create a shamrock. Repeat across paper. You can also sprinkle glitter over the wet paint for leprechaun dust.
