Knock wood, so far so good with potty training DS who is 3. Wanted to start sooner but I had health issues last yr, miscarried, sold our home, and we moved. Not excuses why I started late, just why I started late.

So DS has a potty and a diego toilet seat. We went from going naked form the waist down and wearing diapers when we ran errands, to only wearing undies all day long even when we go out and to his phys. therapy. My question is, at night he wears pull ups and some nights he doesn't even pee til he get up in the morning. The only issues we have is he will poop in his potty but most times waits until his dipe is on at night to really poop like normal. I guess in time this will stop???

Any suggestions would be wonderful on how to get him to use the potty to poop more.

Thanks,
Danette

I honestly think that most kids go through this pooping in diaper once pee trained on the potty...My dd did that for a couple weeks ( maybe even a couple months lol, cannot remember! )

Just keep reinforcing that we poop on the potty too. Make sure he takes his time when he is going, give him a book or something. I think they rush it too often.

Don't feel guilty about potty training him "late", sounds like you had your hands full and it may not have been a good time to do it with all that going on!

When I started seeing the "regular" times that ds would poop I would make him sit there at those times. I had to make him sit there longer than he wanted and would tell him to "push" b/c I think that he was just uncomfortable with sitting. THere were times that we were there for FOREVER! (it felt like it anyway ) Now, he poops on the toilet really quick. I think that he waits till the last minute tho which is a whole other issue. Just try to make him sit on toilet longer before he goes to bed. Maybe read him lots of books like I did. I used to not turn the page until he "pushed". Ds still wears pull-ups at night -but is only precautionary - he hasn't wet them in quite a while.

We had a chart when my oldest son was learning to go to the potty. Once he learned to pee, but still wouldn't poop we changed the chart for only getting stickers when pooping on the potty. It worked pretty much right away. Of course then he wanted to poop ALL the time. I kid you not he'd poop a tiny little poop, say he was done, get his sticker and half an hour later he was back in there. This went on for a few days and we decided he'd figured out a way to beat the system so we changed it to where he'd get a sticker once a day for pooping in the potty all day long. Worked for him!

Oh, and after so many stickers he'd get a little toy! (he was getting a bunch of toys for a couple of days there - little stinker!)
