Can your toddler unscrew a childproof medicine cap? Are you sure?

Last week I had to call Poison Control. While I was attending to laundry, my diva CLIMBED up to the cabinet (we don't keep meds in the medicine cabinet, but in the higher kitchen cabinets) and got the bottle of Children's Ibuprofen. Not only that, but she also went to the drawer, got BOTH the medicine spoon and medicine cup, and methodically poured the bottle (about 1/2 bottle was left) and took it all. Yes, she was coming down with something and wanted to doctor herself. Poison Control assured me that all would be OK, she'd get sleepy, let her sleep and be sure she could be wakened. And she'd be sick to her tummy. She was fine.

So, yesterday, I had a guilty thought: What if I simply didn't put the cap on correctly? Not like me, as I'm usually careful. So, I gave her an empty pill bottle that has a child proof cap and asked her to open it. I timed her. It took her 38 seconds to open it. Less than a minute - I could be using the bathroom.

Test your child, and be double sure things are both high AND locked up. DH has got to get the locks on the cabinet doors we've been at odds about.

OMG!! You must have have been so worried. We have always kept all meds up on a closet shelf where even I have to get a stool to reach them.

Yea this has happened to my toddler also. She was only 1 and somehow she found a bottle of children's advil the blue raspberry kind. She drank half of the bottle. We called poison control and they said the same thing. It actually didn't even effect her. But so scary. It is crazy how smart children can be. I am glad your little one is ok!!

My kids can tear through those child-proof caps. To this day, I won't by the children's vitamins with iron. I don't usually buy children's vitamin anyway because my kids eat a very balanced diet but once in a while I buy a bottle, as the kids think they are cool. Overdosing on iron is so terribly dangerous.
