That is wonderful! My 4 year old is similar. We tried preschool last year and he was the only kid who flipped out when I left. he was still crying when I picked him up. ugh The second time he cried all the way there and then wrapped his arms around the railing to the steps and I physically could not get him off! Finally I had to agree that we would go home and he unwrapped his monkey arms. I gave up after that but then a couple months ago he started wanting to go back. I signed him up to try again this fall. He'll be 5 in August but his birthday is after the kindergarten cutoff. I'm kind of glad because he gets another year to be "socially" ready which was the problem!
He also didn't start staying with Grandma until just recently. I found it helps to have him call me before he goes to bed and I can tell him a story or whatever we normally do. He also takes his favorite blanket and stuffed animal with him so he has things familiar there.
