Has your toddler/preschooler been to the dentist yet? If so how did it go?

Ds just turned 2 this past Friday, and no, he hasn't been yet. How early are they supposed to go? I heard the first appt. should be around 1, but he didn't have but 2 teeth at that time. Then, I just kept putting it off b/c of money. I want to get him in next month though, but I'm so scared of how he will react! Can't wait to read the responses of other parents.

I took my son in for his first appt at about 10 months. He only had two teeth. He's gone in every six months. It's not a big deal, the dentist just looks in his mouth, tries to brush them. This time though, they are supposed to try to clean his teeth. I had an appt a couple of weeks ago that I postponed, so he'll go in sometime next month. Mostly the dentist just gets the opportunity to lecture me about brushing my kids teeth. Like I'm supposed to hold him down to do it. Yeah, right. I'd just as soon not have him scared to death of a toothbrush. I mean, I don't want him to get cavities, but I'm not going to sit on him either. We do the best we can. He's 2-1/2 now.

My older two have been. They went shortly after they each turned 3. For my oldest, the first visit didn't go well. All that was able to get done was look at his teeth, which was fine. The next few times, they were able to do a little more but it was a slow process getting to where they could actually clean his teeth. He gets really anxious and nervous about the dentist - just like DH does so I guess he got it from him. He's gotten use to the hygentist that cleans his teeth and that has helped him some. Of course, our insurance changed and now we're having to find a new dentist. But I'm hoping because he's almost 8 that he'll be okay with the change.

my almost 4 year old went the week of his 3rd b-day they just brushed his teeth and checked them over by the next 6 month he was able to get x-ray of the teeth he loves the people there and looks forward to going(they have a huge wall of jaws they think is so cool)...i asked our dentist if 3 is still the right age(dd is 21 months) they said they still go with 3 as long as there are no signs of problems and we brush her teeth 2 times a day..

Our ped and dentist both recommend it once they turn 3. I played dentist first so they were used to the sensations of metal in their mouth, and it worked out so well. Diva will probably get her first in a few months, as she turns 3 in August.

We started my oldest dd at 3 years old. I will take my 2.5 yr old with me to when she is 3 years old, they look at her teeth and then the next time she will have them brushed & flossed. I read them Dora Goes to the Dentist.

I took my DS at 2 yrs and it went terribly! He was just too young to want to sit, let alone have them "clean" anything!
I am going to try again when he is 3.

I have a 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 and we haven't made it to the dentist yet...I think unless I see a problem I will not take them until right before school age.
