well our pediatrician starts tracking kids bmi at 2 years old. where my friend goes to a different one and has a daughter who is obviously overweight and wants suggestions to help her dd but her ped is not concerned with that kind of stuff.

so my question is does your pediatrician track that and if not would you want them to?

no they do not tho they do look at the weight tho to make sure its not too high for her hight etc but nothing to extensive (oldest dd was told by the dr she needs to watch her weight ~I was not happy about that since it should be talked to me not her in the room she is only 8~ also she is a VERY active kid and also a VERY healthy eater. yes she does eat some junk but not much maybe a hanful of chips and a cookie a days worth (so like I said not much)
anyhow I think its not nec for most kids

Last year we switched from a pediatrician to a general practice Dr., the pediatricians office only weighed my kids, didn't always get the height, never figured their BMI and never took their blood pressure, and would only fill out the growth chart if I asked to see it. Our new Drs office always gets a weight, height, blood pressure and gives me a copy of their growth chart with their BMI on it.

my oldest ds was on the obese side for his bmi mind you my ped never said in front of my child she was getting concerned she simply showed me on paper what his bmi was and what catagory he fell into and gave me a sheet of suggestions. wich the main one was cut out juice no soda(wich this child did not drink anyway) keep milk to 12 oz a day and try to keep him active and keep weight gain for the next year to a min 2lbs.. yep i was giving my kid way to much milk he was drinking his calories.. but we took those suggestions and he did not gain but 1lb in a year and his height caught up and the next check up he was in a normal range.. so i was glad she did keep track he is happier feels he fits in better ect.

but i would not want them to make and issue in front of my child i think thats bad for self esteem. and i do agree its not nec for all kids.

We go to a family med dr and she just tracks it out each year on the growth chart for us. I think it is something that should be monitored if there is a potential problem. But it should NEVER be brought up in front of the child.

No, I have never had that tracked on my kids. I suppose if I were at all concerned I would question it.

I haven't heard mine call it a "BMI" but they do check her weight and height at every appointment. Then they show me the little scale and tell me where she is on it percentage-wise. Mine's been tall and skinny pretty much since she started growing. I'd be surprised if it changed. If anything I worry more about her getting ENOUGH food. She seems to hate any meat that I use which means when I do cook I have at least a 50% chance that she'll be playing with it instead of really eating.
