I am planning a homebirth. I talked to my company today and was told that after the baby is born, I can call with the baby's Social Security Number to get it added to our insurance. I know with a homebirth I have to take the baby to see a pediatrician within 3 days or so (if not sooner) and was wondering..

How do I get my baby's SSN- can I only request it once she is born?

Can I take my baby to the pediatrician without being on our plan and then add her later and it still be covered?

I'm sure my midwife knows the answer, but I won't see her for a month.

Even if you were giving birth in the hospital you wouldn't have the social in 3 days. My insurance just took the baby's name then I called back later, maybe 4 wks, with the social. HTH

Yeah, no way you would ever have the social security number in 3 days! It will take at least a month maybe up to 6 months. You will have to take the birth certificate to the social security office and get the number ordered, for lack of better explaining. I would say call with the name and info as soon as possible to get the baby added!!! Good luck!!!

With my insurance, the baby was automatically covered for the 1st 30 days, even with no SS #.

Call your insurance company to find out their procedure. My insurance company, United Healthcare, would automatically cover under my id# for 30 days. Cigna required it to be under the baby's #, but would still cover it. Your insurance company will guide you.

Pretty much all insurance companys have a grace period in the case of an event such as a birth, marriage , adoption, etc. We were able to just use the insurance card and file it under my name. Once I got the birth certificate I took it to the social security office and filed for his card. I received it in the mail within two weeks.

With dd we just took her in to the ped and they did,t charge us anything, then when we got her insurance card, we brought it in and they billed the insurance company and billed us for the co pay.

Great to know! I will call my benefits center or insurance company. I had a feeling it would take awhile to get the baby's SSN

One thing I forgot to add: The hospital gave us a Certificate of Live Birth, which proved that we had a live one . I simply called the soc. sec. office and they took my info over the phone. You may want to call their 800# and see what they do. If you are having a midwife, perhaps they supply the certificate.

This was the case for me, they filed everything under my insurance number for the first 30 days. I don't think they needed the social though, I think it was a copy of the birth certificate.
