Lately he's been taking at least a hour to fall asleep for naps and bedtimes. He will talk, sing, cry, or complain the entire hour+ until he falls asleep. I know he's tired when I put him down...but not overly tired. For the most part he has a full belly, clean diaper, and has all his loveys. I can't figure it out. He used to fall asleep in 15 mins or less.

He currently is teething and has croup (oh boy does that suck! ). So that explains this week...but it's been more then a week now. Is this normal?

It varies greatly with my kids. Sometimes they fall asleep in 10 minutes and sometimes they take longer. I'm trying to remember how old your DS is and I can't right now, but at around the 18 month mark for both of my kids they started taking a lot longer to go to sleep. Both of them went through a phase where they would talk forever after I put them down. I would stand in the hallway and listen to them. Mostly they were talking or singing about their day. I read somewhere that it is a way for toddlers to unwind after their day.

Maybe he needs less or shorter naps?

you also mentioned naps, maybe it is time to go to one nap a day.

croup is awful, esp at night, poor little guy, and maybe that is why too.

dd varies, sometimes 10 minutes, other days 30 minutes.

I also give dd a few books to look at ( night light on ) and then go in and remove them after she is asleep.

I'm going through the same thing with my DD right now. Sometimes she cries, talks to herself, or sometimes I can just hear her music start over again (she has one of those fisher price aquariums in her crib). She only gets one nap, and she is going to need to start falling asleep faster bc since I'm back at work, I will be waking her from her naps to leave for the babysitters house She is NOT a happy kid when woken early from her nap! this ought to be interesting!!!

Mine take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. I always give them a few books or toys and ask them to play quietly until they fall asleep.

Usually it's a matter of minutes. Sometimes it is up to 15.

He is 15months. And we are down to one nap now () but I still do a quiet time during the time of his second nap. He takes his nap anywhere from 30 mins. to 3 or 4 hours. I find it really odd since his nap is the same time each day...aside from a busy day here and there. And he's always tired or grumpy and easily goes to bed (gathers his paci, snoopy, and teether and heads to bed). So it's not like he's wide awake. I'm just not getting the being up for hours in his crib before falling asleep. And now he's waking up at night too. Could he be afraid of something??

I think it is a tad early for nightmares, but you never know. Does he have an ear infection? that really messes with sleep.

Nope, he doesn't have a ear infection. Thank goodness!
