Ok, so, DH & I are TTC for the first time. I have never smoked and I am not a big drinker. I take vitamins (& folic acid) daily and try to eat right. My only downfalls are that I need my coffee to get me through the day (i have cut down to one cup a day, sometimes i have a second cup and now and then I drink a caffienated soda) and, I have a very active job as a gymnastics coach so I am almost always taking advil or aleve for muscle aches & pains.
So, my question is, how awful is all of the the caffiene & the pain meds? Also, which pain meds are "safe" for during pregnancy? I know I have to go to the doctor to speak with her about this, but I have been really busy running recitals at my gym and once the craziness is over I will be sure to make an appointment. We have not been really actively trying yet, just letting nature take it's course, but if we should get lucky, i don't want to be taking any medicine that is unsafe. Like I said, we are new to this... and I don't want to tell anyone just yet, so I can't speak to my mother or SIL about this b/c we just aren't ready to tell anyone. Please help! Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I don't know much about pain meds, BUT, I know the coffee is fine. My dr actually told me to NOT cut it out cold turkey, you will make yourself sick doing that. Cut down slowly, till you can cut it out completly. Like mix it half decaf if you can, maybe only 1 cup, ect. Yes caffine is not the best for baby, but its not horrible, just a good idea to get rid of it if you can. AND don't forget the other items that contain caffine too, like soda, and CHOCOLATE!

As far as the pain meds go, they are fine in early pregnancy, but later on, I believe 28 weeks, you need to stop. Ibruprophin is dangerous in late pregancy, and can cause birth defects. The best thing to take is Tylenol. My dr always had me take tylenol or the store brand equivient. And they told me if I needed something stronger (I suffer from migraines) they would write a script for something else. Thankfully, I never needed anything else.

I was told that tylenol is something you can take when pregnant. I know it does not do much for muscle aches though.

I was told to take Tylenol, but I'm not sure when. Will tylenol relieve the pain for you? I think anything in moderation will be fine. Once you go to the doctor, she can tell you how much coffee you can have. But I believe in moderation, one cup is probably fine. Two is probably fine if you need it too. I'm sure I did worse. I think I had some margaritas the night before I found out I was prego!

Like anything else, caffeine is fine in moderation. Just don't have 10 or 12 a day!

My doctor okayed me to take tylenol but not ibuprofen or excedrin. Definitely talk to your doctor and even though I have the okay to take tylenol I try not to. I only take it when I have to.

Only Tylenol for pain. My dr actualy told me that the other meds like ibuprofen and advil will reduce your amniotic fluid.
Limit the caffeine. One glass a day, about 8 oz, of coffee or soda.

I just had my first dr appt for this pregnancy a couple weeks ago. So those are things that I was just told by my dr.

I agree about the Tylenol. A few weeks back I was having round ligament pains the nurse said I could do 1 advil a day but not once I hit 3rd trimester. I did not like the idea of taking any advil so I avoided it. I believe aleve falls in the same category as advil.

The caffeine they say a couple cups or cans a day is fine. But they say you really should not do more then 2 cups or 2 cans or a mix.

hope this helps a little. Good luck.

Tylenol was the pain reliever my doctor ok'd. Definitely visit your doctor. Mine gave me a list of medications that were ok to take for certain problems. I never did try anything except the tylenol though.

They ok'd caffeine too. They just said to not to drink so much that it would keep you awake. I did cut back and started drinking decaf coffee. They told me to avoid artifical sweeteners (Splenda was ok) because they said that we don't yet know what kind of long term effects they may have.

Good luck!!
