Could someone tell me what a good crib mattress is? I am pregnant with my first child and don't know what type of mattress I need. Is it suppose to be firm or soft?

This is my first posting, so thank you in advance for responding.

It is supposed to be firm. I think I spent around $100 on mine. Also if you don't have a crib sheet yet, I must recommend the kind that have snaps that hook onto the bars of the crib. They are soft and thick and have a waterproof backing. When you need to change them you don't have to take the whole bumper off to get the sheet off. I just put a regular sheet on and then put one of these on top of that. Then if you have to whip it off in the middle of the night because of a leak (that only happened in the first couple of months with both my boys) you don't have to change it in the middle of the night. I forget what they are called but they sell them everywhere.

definitely firm. I also went with a foam mattress because they are really lightweight. You are going to be changing the sheets a lot so you want to be able to do it as fast and easy as possible.

We have foam mattresses also on our twin bed and queen bed. This is not your soft, pliable, weak little foam. You want a good solid foam mattress. The best thing about them is that they are very light. I am vertically challenged and not the strongest person around but I can easily move our queen size mattress because it is lightweight and it has stood up for over 13 years so it is not flimsy.

Good luck - this board has lots of great tips on it so I hope it will be helpful to you.

Firm. We spent about $100 also. The kind we got has two sides, one firmer side for infants and another little softer for toddlers.(it came from babies-r-us) It is a little heavy, but I think it is an excellent mattress. We got a hand-me-down mattress from someone dh works with and it is very cheap! It's OK for the toddler bed, but having the better mattress, I would not put it in a crib. I think it is worth spending the $100 for a good mattress. If you plan on having more than 1 child and/or using a toddler bed, you'll get your money's worth out of it.

This is called the ultimate crib sheet and if you yahoo it you can buy online, I think Target online carries them, like 17 bucks or something like that but really worth the money!!
