I used to work as a labor / delivery coach. You will know labor is imminent when you lose your mucous plug - it's a clearish jelly-like glob that will have blue and red veins in it. Some women never notice it. Some find it when they wipe after going to the bathroom. Once you lose the mucous plug, you will very likely go into labor within 48 hours.
The next sign is your 'bloody show'. You'll get this about 24 hours before labor. If you get it (when you get it) it may be just a few spots or it will look like your period suddenly started. Don't be shocked. Nothing is wrong with the pregnancy but do let your doctor know if/when it happens.
Your water may not break during early labor. Sometimes they have to break the sac in the hospital. The longer you can go without your water breaking, the better for you and the baby. And sometimes the sac just tears and doesn't gush out. When that happens you get a little bit of fluid out with every contraction. If that is happening, tell your doctor.
Real contractions are much different from Braxton Hicks. When real labor starts there won't be a doubt. When a woman was on the phone with me I could tell where in labor she was by the sound of her voice. Real labor sort of takes your breath away.
Good luck! Have fun with the labor (seriously!) Congratulations!
