As for the used crib issue, I have never heard anything about midew in the wood, and I have researched used cribs. The issue I came across involved the space between the crib slats. Don't quote me, but I think the safety standard is somewhere around two inches. However, I believe this standard was updated in 1997. Personally, if the crib was in good shape and did not require any work, was not missing any parts, etc., I would take a used five year old crib without concern. Spend your money on a high end, firm, reversable, spring coil, mattress--you do NOT want a used mattress.
