Hello,

I am wanting to be frugal when it comes to freezing breast milk, and I read in Kim's book to freeze it in ice cube trays, put needed amount in freezer bag, and thaw when needed. Have any of you used this? Do you think freezing it in a clean ice cube tray will have any harm to the milk since it is not covered?

Also, my sister offered to give me her old crib. It is 5 years old. I heard not to use a used crib if it has been in a basement because even after you throughly clean the wood, mildew can get into the wood itself? Would you agree? Again, just trying to be frugal since we are cutting back to one income.

I was planning on doing the same thing with the breastmilk. If you are worried about the trays being uncovered, they sell covered ones here:

But the page says the cover is only to keep out the freezer odors and to prevent freezer burn. I don't have any ice cube trays so I think I am just going to spend some extra money and get the trays with covers. I looked in Wal-mart also for them but didn't see them. I need to check Target, you would think one of them would have trays with covers, but maybe not.

For the crib, I have no idea as I have never heard of that but I have also never used a used crib.

As for the used crib issue, I have never heard anything about midew in the wood, and I have researched used cribs. The issue I came across involved the space between the crib slats. Don't quote me, but I think the safety standard is somewhere around two inches. However, I believe this standard was updated in 1997. Personally, if the crib was in good shape and did not require any work, was not missing any parts, etc., I would take a used five year old crib without concern. Spend your money on a high end, firm, reversable, spring coil, mattress--you do NOT want a used mattress.
