What exactly is back labor?? I read that "true" labor starts in your low back and wraps around to your upper tummy. Is the low back pain felt on one side constantly or the entire low back? Does it come in waves like a real contraction?? Do you feel it just in your back for awhile and then it moves to the front?

I have ALOT of low back pain but just on my left side and it mostly is constant...so just wondering? Maybe I just lifted something wrong.

I had back pain with my first and all I can tell you is that it started hurting and didn't stop until my daughter was born. No waves just steady mind numbing pain.

I had back labor with both of mine. With the first it was totally in the back - low and very intense - no labor pains in the front at all. With my second, it started in the front and moved to the back by the end of the contraction. With both the pain came and went with the contractions (as opposed to being constant) although I was having two contractions on top of one another with my first (called coupling). It was very intense and painful with not a lot of down time between contractions. My first labor was much rougher than the second.

I didn't know what it was...just found out I was having it. And had it with both kids. In my case, babies were pressed against my tailbone and facing the tailbone. My first was also a stargazer - top of head wasn't first, his face was. I didn't know any different, so I just knew it hurt. It wasn't until I was well into the second that they told me it was back labor and told me they were glad I finally agreed to the epidural (I knew early with my first). So my advice: just say yes when they ask if you want painkillers. And see if you can get the epidural that will be constant - with my first, it wore off and they did it again, which they can't always do. With my second, they kept it constant - big difference. No pain, but I was still able to push, mostly because I did my Kegels every day.

Your baby could be sitting/laying on a nerve or muscle, causing the pain - you can try to gently move him/her. But I did have "contractions" coming and going with both. If in doubt or question, I would call your Dr., as every mom and baby are different. You're getting excitingly close!

Back labor hurts like a mother. The only way to explain it is like some one hitting your tailbone very hard My little one came out side ways so I had it and I got to enjoy it with no pain relief because the doctor never let my epidural take affect. He came in about 8 minutes after I got it and had it turned off and told me he was going to break my water and I was having the baby now because he had more babies to deliver shortly!

I had back pain with my second birth and it was nothing like the tummy contractions that I had with my first. I could handle the tummy contractions because it felt like a severe monthly cramping pain. The back contractions were much worse and harder to deal with. They did come and go like the tummy contractions did. I arrived at the hospital dialated at a nine with both pregnancies so no drugs were allowed. I think with my next pregnancy I am going to see if the doctor will allow an under water birth. I need to do some more research but I think that would have helped with the so called ease of the contractions.

With Tommy, I felt NOTHING in my tummy, just intense, intense pain that started in my lower back, wrapped around my thighs and went straight to my toes. I had an epidural with him, but because I have scoliosis, the meds could not get into my spine properly and it never did take affect.

Sounds to me like everyone is describing back labor consistantly with how I felt it. Good luck with your labor and delivery! (I think it's the best part...to work so hard, and see such a miracle as it all climaxes!) I hope you have a great delivery!
