One night last week he had a significant fever (just below 102). Sometimes during play time he'll just lean forward and wine. Recently he learned to walk and for the past almost week it looks as though it might be painful for him. He stands up and then falls down and cries. The pediatrician didn't say anything was wrong with him yesterday but she did put a bag on him to collect a urine sample. That didn't work too well. The peds office is closed today, so i have to wait until tomorrow to even be able to have a chance to submit a sample to the lab. Which will take a few days to come back with results.

If this a UTI...what can I do to help comfort him? Can I give him watered down cranberry juice? What do I do? I know something isn't right. He isn't himself. He did fall backwards off of one step (completely padded and carpeted...it wasn't any harder of a fall than him falling while he's walking).

Does anyone have any experience with UTI's in a 1 year old?

Thanks

Cranberry juice won't help with the pain of a UTI...and the jury is still out if it really helps at all in preventing or helping to alleviate UTI's in general. I read an article not that long ago in the New England Journal of Medicine about it.

You're probably better off giving him some acetaminophen or ibuprofen...and calling the doc first thing to find out the results of the lab work.

If you are not willing to go to urgent care, which I would do w/my kids - a ped closed in the middle of the week, call your pharmacist. There is a little orange pill that numbs the tract. It does turn the pee red or orange. I just don't know it's safety or dosage for a baby. I do, however, know it works. Many Walgreens are open 24 hours. This is OTC medicine.

What would make the ped think its a uti? Those are quite uncommon in boys, although they do happen. Did your doctor check his testicles by any chance? Could be a torsion - he could have a testicle that is twisting which would cause the pain. My son had this, he was in a lot of pain, it wasnt constant, it came and went when he stood up, changed the diaper, etc. And uti results should be fairly immediate, you shouldnt have to wait. Hope he feels better, definetly take him back if he's not feeling better though.

I agree with 80sgirl. This sounds less like a UTI and more like something else. My son had a problem with his testicles also years ago and we had to take him to the ER the pain was so bad. I would take him to the doctor tomorrow.
