I get so frustrated when I hear stories like yours. I kept hearing that the epidural would stop me from feeling and pushing. Well, guess what? I exercised my kegels all during my pregnancy so I would have control (and prevent bladder issues later). I was VERY numb - overly numb from the epidural, yet, because I'd exercised my kegels, could still force myself to push because I still had control of my stomach muscles. I did have to work harder, yes, but since I had back labor, believe me, an epidural was needed! I know because at one point w/my first it started to wear off. With my second, they had it on continuously and my pushing went very well. It can be done, but doctors need to educate their patients. With my first, they whisked him off - I didn't even know I could ask to have him. With my second, I got to hold and nurse her while they took their grand old time stitching the tear - I felt nothing but happiness with my new baby.
