We made a list early in my pregnancy, and picked a"practical" name which would sound good in both German and English, since ds is growing up bilingual. Alex. I like the name, but somehow it just didn't stick very well. We continued the list and in the end picked a name we like (Jackson - shortened to Jack) and my dad's middle name for his middle name. We're both happy with it. Jack isn't really easy for most Germans to say, but our last name is SO GERMAN that we figured it's ok for him to have a really American first name!
Should we have another son, we want to name him Jamie. And a future daughter would probably be Alice, after my great-grandma.
What was important to us was that the name be strong and fitting for a child and adult, and that it go well with our last name. It is also important to me that the name has a meaning. My name is Ruth, which I hated as a kid (so old-fashioned!!!) but learned to love as a teenager because I was different and it has such a great meaning: beautiful friend. Ever since I learned that I've tried to live up to it!!
