with my dd i started wearing maternity clothes at 6 1/2 months, then ihad her a month later. i only gained 15lbs with her. but with ds, i had to start wearing maternity clothes by 5 months. i only had 2 pairs of decent pants and a couple of shirts otherwise i wore sweats and big t-shirts all the time. i only wore the jeans and mat tops out in public. i found the jeans to be super incomfortable, the buttons onthe sides always dug into me.
