So my dd is on the pacifier, but only at bedtime. I let her keep it in her mouth after nap until she sits in the highchair and takes it out then I grab it up and put it away until nap again. I want to get her off the paci, but need some suggestions. She just turned 1.
Maybe it's not that big of a deal to let her keep it for nap time. What do you think?
If I continue to let her keep it then when should I try to get her off of it? I think definatley no later than 2!

Personally at one i wouldn't stress over it all that much. That's just me though. I probably would consider taking it away closer to two if it were me.

My dd had her paci until she was 2.5. I think it was say too long, by that time she was askin' for it by name. I read somewhere to snip the end off of paci, wait a couple days, snip a little more. Finally, paci is barely able to be held in the mouth and the child is supposed to be annoyed by paci enough at this point to just give it up. I guess by snipping it, the nipple deflates and they don't get as much satisfaction from sucking. This did not work for us, buy at 2.5, my dd was old enough to know that they make more paci's, the "defective" one could be replaced.

My Dr. told me no bottle or pacifier pass 1 yr old. I only had 1 ds who used a pac. and my bff told me the sooner I take it away the better. I took it away about 10 months and just threw ithem away one day. YES it was hard for a few days though worth it inthe long run. I really believe in the soonerthe better. THe reason- they get attached to it and it will just get worse the longer she has it. At 1 yr she is attached though not as bad as she will be when she has it for another year or two.

On a side note- she will not have it forever. eventually she will give it up so it really is just a matter of doing it know and her fussing or letting her enjoy the security of it and letting her give it up when she wants.

My dd had her paci till she was 2 I let her keep it after 1 but ONLY at nap and sleep time. She still talks about it at 8 months later and will get things put them in her mouth and call them her paci... But she doesn't have it anymore. I think she misses it. I don't see anything wrong with her still having it after 1 no one ever said anything to me except the dentiest that sade no paci after 5 (wow) 5 ...

My dd will be 2 next month. She uses a binky as well. It has always been a naptime only thing and stays in the bed. It has really helped her through her teething stages being very soothing for her. So I didn't take it at 1. I have decided to wait till 2 and have her collect all her binky's and leave them for the binky fairy who will take them to the babies who need them and leave her a big girl gift in place of them!

People do make a big deal out of this one. My daughter had it until right after her 3rd birthday and she lost it. She did just fine, until she found it again one day about a month later, at that point bribery came in and I bought a pony in exchange. It was just something that she used at bedtime and for car rides but it did get a lot of comments from people.

Now my son -- I'm wishing he would use the dang thing! He just wants to nurse all the time.

I really love that idea of the binky fairy. I do let her have it a little more when she's teething because she gets it in the side of her mouth and bites down hard. I just can't decide when to take it away, but on a side note. I do have her off the bottle and have had since about 3 weeks before her 1st birthday.

When one of my daycare children was at this stage, the parents told her that daddy, who goes away on a work trip at least once a month, had to take her paci's to a new baby on his trip that week. Seemed to work well for her - she still brings that up once in a while.
