How did you and when did you start weening your DS or DD off of the dreaded pacifier? My son wont fall asleep/stay asleep without it he even smacks his li0ps and makes a sucking noise when he's ready to fall asleep because he wants it.

I think it is kind of like the bottle. You have to teach them to stop needing it to fall asleep or soothe them. I just started sleep training my daughter who is almost 8 months old. She was waking up wanting her bottle because that is how my dh was putting her to sleep while I was working. You will probably have to go through a lot of crying to get him to sleep without it/stay asleep. My kids would never use pacifier though, and I tried!

We never had to wean as our babies were never given them.

BUT...

My sister and a bestfriend of mine have weaned 4 babies from them and how they did it was cut the tip off the pacifier. When the baby goes to suckle it, it's nothing like they want anymore. If all are cut they will no longer want it.

Good Luck mama!

I agree w/HappyMom. My ds LOVES his paci (and so do I!) My goal is to take it away no later than age 3....maybe 2 1/2. However now at 15 months old, he has his paci a lot of the day. I am going to start leaving it in his bed. This way he ONLY has it at time to sleep. I think gradually taking it away will work best for us.

I don't have kids. But I had gotten sick of my nephew trying to "talk" to us with it in his mouth, so one night while he was staying with Dh and I overnight, I pretended to lose it. He always was saying "nu nu,, nu nu" when he went to bed ( kinda like he says "bear....bear" when he wants his bear to go to bed with him). I told him "no more nu nu, sorry" and he was fine. I told his dad about it when I dropped him off, and from then on, no more pacifier....nephew was great about it, and didn't seem upset at all.....

At 12 months, the binky was restricted to the crib only. I also would keep one in the stroller and in my purse in case he had a breakdown in the stroller or car seat, I don't really need to do this anymore, but I still do just in case. Ds is not allowed to play with it in his mouth or walk around the house with it (this is because I also have a nephew who was still using it at 3 and talking around it, bugged me) Just recently he will stand by the crib and tantrum as he tries to reach it (he's 18 mos now), I'm hoping it's a passing phase.

I'm hoping to have the binky completely gone at 2. What has helped is that he has a lovey, his "blue bear". He holds it, gives it kisses and sometimes chews on the ears, ewwww. Blue bear is not allowed to leave the house, I don't want him to drag his lovey evrywhere (stays cleaner and don't want to lose it!) Blue bear made the bottle weaning much easier (he actually wasn't attatched to it until he weaned) and hopefully will help with binky weaning.

When my DD was 9 months old, she started spitting it out when we put it in her mouth for sleeps so I took it away and played her a song instead. She now loves the song before bed and we all (well mummy and Lillee) dance to 1 song before bed.

I have no idea why she gave it up but its great.

I got lucky with my youngest daughter. One day I had decided that I was going to get rid of her pacifiers. It was rough for a day or so, but I was rather suprised how fast she recovered. She is now 15 months and pacifer free!
