IMHO, those cotton fleece receiving blankets are just too small. I like a larger cotton blanket.

ALL of the blankets are useful.

Afgans are great because they have holes in them so they are nice for draping over a stroller or a crib to block light or cold air but you know they can still breath. My thing is I hate acrylic so I prefer a cotton or cotton/polyester afgan.

The polar fleece blankets are great because they are so warm and water resistent.

A large quilt is perfect for laying down on the grass or the floor for baby to crawl around on.

Turtle fur! Anyone ever get one of those? I got one as a gift with my last baby, and it was so soft! I will have to look it up to show those of you that have never heard of it.

Turtle Fur Security Baby Blanket Baby Gift

OK, I found it. I guess it seems that it is just fleece? No, I didn't think it was turtle fur. :-)
Wow, they are pricey. I didn't even really know the person that gave me this gift.
Edited to add that it is acrylic fleece. Which, I guess is better than the other stuff sold in stores.

Gerber made a thermal blanket that was sold as a single blanket. It was stretchy enough to swaddle my baby. In fact, it was the only blanket I could get to work for swaddling. I think I just bought them at Walmart and Meijer.

Those smaller 4-pack blankets were a waste for me. I sometimes used them as a mat to change baby diapers when out of the house. I had a ton of them too!!

I thought the receiving blankets were too small too. During the day I used the softest blanket I could find. At night I used blanket sleepers that went over the jammies.

I have 2 velour pottery barn blankets I was given at my shower. My mom embroidered a little farm boy on one of them, it's still my ds favorite blanket. It's soft and cuddly and big enough to use for awhile, I still fold it to cover him in the crib and he's 18 mo. The second one I got I am saving for baby #2, we barely used it and I'd love to have one for him or her (if they ever happen, grrrrrr!).

My SIL swears by the barefoot dreams blankets from Nordstrom, she has one for each of her 4 kids and a large one for the living room (it cost $120!). They are VERY soft, but I don't know if they are any better than my PB ones or even the soft fleece ones we have from target!

I LOVE the halo sleep sacks, ds has used them since we stopped swaddling him and still uses one when he naps (I always take his pants off and he pulls off his socks) and when he needs an extra layer on cold nights. I'm about to go buy a 2T size!

They have cotton and fleece.

Also, I hated the regular receiving blankets. They ended up being burp blankets.
I had a dear lady at church that made me larger ones made of soft flannel. They were great for swaddling.

My aunt crocheted a blanket with a hood on it. I just love it! I can swaddle him, and then easily wrap him w/o worrying his little had will come off. It's so fast! I also sew several recieving blankets together to make them larger for when the baby grows...

I used receiving blankets all the time!!! Crochet afghans are not good since they have holes that baby can get stuck in. Most fleece and quilts are too heavy to put on a baby when they are sleeping. They are good for puting a baby on when they are on the floor.

I mostly used footed blanket sleepers.
