My cousin is pregnant with her first baby, she has two step kids already, she got married last July, she's only 26. We have been so excited, my ds has been the only little kid in the family.`
She went in for her 19 week ultrasound to find out the sex and instead found out that somehting is wrong. The baby has an enlarged bladder, 2-3x normal size, and her fluid is low. There is a blockage in the bladder, so the baby is not contributing to the fluid. They could not tell the sex because it had its legs crossed.
If it is a boy, they will do an inutero surgery and put in a stint to open the flow. This will keep the baby alive until birth and then it will need more surgeries and most likely will have decreased lung capacity and kidney problems. If it is a girl, the baby will die. We're praying for a boy. The fact that they are finding this problem now is not good news, it means this is a worse form of this problem, many times the bladder issue does not appear until after birth. This is a congenital, inherited problem. They also said the baby has a 10% chance of having downs and may have a club foot.
Has anyone experienced this before or known anyone who has? We are just waiting to find out the sex as she meets with specialists, she's at the University of Cincinatti hospital, it's supposed to be good. I just don't know what to think, I'm just sick over this....

My son was diagnosed at 16wks gestation with Hydronephrosis which is a blockage in the kidneys. I was seen constantly by a specialist due to this most of the time it clears up by the time the baby is 5 yrs old. It is really common from what I was told for boys to have this situation although it was his kidneys not his bladded. I would wait to hear what the specialist says cause she will probably be seing a maternal fetal medicine doctor which is a specialist plus a urologist for the baby. I would say with the downs I think they can test for that by bld work. I would also suggest having her get a second opinion and a more indepth sono which they will do on her. Which they will look at everything more closely. My prayers are deffinately with you and your families on this journey but I would try to stay positive cause drs can be wrong look at all the kids out there that are not supposed to be here and they are miracles and surviving day to day.

thanks for the info and support, we're trying to be positive, it never helps to get all doomsday. She has an indepth meeting with a different specialist this week, I'm not sure if they've thought about getting another opinion. I'm assuming they're exploring all options right now, but I can't really ask as they are dealing with so much already...

I though I should update you all on the situation.

My cousin miscarried last Thursday, she was 22 weeks.
The doctors had determined the baby was a boy, did not have downs, it's lungs were formaing well and it had a strong heart. The kidneys were not functioning. They were going to put the shunt in the bladder to help it drain, then the baby would have been on dialysis from birth until it was strong enough for a transplant. They had just had her last consult before surgery and she miscarried the next day.
They named the baby Aidan.

Thank you for all of your prayers and support, my family has appreciated them.

I am so sorry. Wishing for peace for you, her and her family through this. 22 Weeks. Wow. I hope she takes it easy and rests while her body recovers from the loss.
