DS is 7 mos. old and at 6 mos. he started babbling a little and said "ma-ma". Not a lot but enough for me to think he was on his way to talking. The babbling really only lasted a week or so and has seem to pretty much disappear. He babbles occasionally but only when he is really tired or upset. DH and I try to talk as much as possible to him and read books but I am concerned. My ques. is-should I even be concerned yet? I called the doc. and they told me to bring him in for a hearing test which I am doing Fri. On one hand I think his hearing is fine since I will sing him his favorite songs and he smiles and for the most part looks at me when I call his name. On the other hand, when he was born he initially failed the hearing test but the next day passed it so I am wondering if maybe there is a hearing problem. I guess I am just looking for any advice! I am overly sensitive to everything DS does since I have worked with kids with dev. disabilities and I think I am hyper-focused on every little thing. Any reassurance would be great. Sorry to ramble!

I hope the hearing test turns up something. Are you worried about some kind of autism? It sounds like you might have the connections to talk to someone really knowlegeable (someday I'm going to have to learn how to spell that!) in this area who could give you ideas on how to be an advocate for your little guy. If nothing else, having some specific information might lessen your fears . . . .

I hope you will keep us posted!

Personally i don't think you have anything to worry about. I mean seven months is still so young. I wouldn't be fretting that he's not saying mama and etc....just yet. Go have his ears checked if you think it will make you feel better but my guess is he's just fine. Maybe you know too much about dev disabilities and like you said that makes you super sensitive.

My ds is around the same age and similarly was oohing and babbling non-stop at around 5 months. Then it really tapered off and I started getting concerned...other kids at his age seemed desparate to talk. But at just shy of 6 months he started crawling - and those other babies were barely sitting. Then two teeth came in. Maybe yours is just focusing in on other areas of development?
Over the last couple of weeks ds has been trying to stand and pulling *everything* off of shelves and such. Now starting about a week ago he is starting to increase the babbling and has thrown a few consonants in here and there. So I think he's maybe switching from his physical development to speech?
For sure get the hearing checked if it is concerning you but hopefully it just normal.

Well I feel a little better since DS seems to be about the same developmentally as yours marrobinson. He has had 2 teeth for about a month now and started crawling about 2 weeks ago and has been pulling himself up for the past couple days now. So maybe he is concentrating on other areas? Hopefully things will be okay, I will keep you all posted.

I wouldn't be worried yet...just get the hearing checked and have the doc looked at him. My son is on the autism scale and spoke early, so that's not always the indicator. There are others that the doctor can look at, such as muscle tone, etc.

Does his hearing SEEM ok? Does he seem to only hear loud sounds?

Babies regress and then pick up a lot...Yours is probably moving more, getting ready to cruise and walk...they often stop concentrating on sound as they try to get control of their bodies. Either way, it's great to have him checked...at least there will be a documented baseline to compare with if there are issues down the road.

And being overanxious? Hey, you're a normal mom!!!
