This is my 1st pregnancy in which I've been put on iron pills. This could explain why I've been literally exhausted almost this entire pregnancy---the OB kept telling me I'd get my energery back in the 2nd trimester (never did) and also that I'm old..LOL!! I'm also colder than normal which is the total opposite of what usually happens to me during pregnancy.

Any advice on the iron pills? My OB told me to take a stool softener because they may cause constipation That's great because I've pretty much been constipated this whole pregnancy--I know, TMI. I've also heard the pills can cause upset stomachs. Just wanting to hear from BTDT moms. Thanks a bunch!

If they upset your tummy.take them before before bed...and keep crackers there and water. I had to do that w/my prenatals.

And I think it's Fibersure...makes these fiber crackers that taste like graham crackers. They do help.

I had to take them, too. I was sure to drink lots of water and eat lots of high fiber foods. By doing this, I never had to take the stool softener.

When I got my iron checked with this last pregnancy is was extremely low. My dr told me to take an iron pill 3x a day it was that low. I hate taking iron pills. I had to take them with my other pregnancies too, but not 3x a day.
Take them with a Vitamin C pill or a glass of orange juice. The vitamin c will help your body absorb the iron. Don't take them with milk it will slow down the absorbtion. Drink plenty of water. I took my pills right before I ate a meal. I didn't get sick taking them. If you have never taken iron before I will warn you now, it will turn your stool dark green the whole time you are taking them.

I had to take them as well- (not the softner though) drink lots of water.
They did not bother me and I took them whenever I remembered to.
Also not so sure they really made that much of a difference

With low iron you have a higher possibility of needing a blood transfusion after delivery. My iron was at 8 when they first took it. They want you around 12 when you deliver. After a month of taking iron I brought it up to a 10. I had another month before delivery so I had to keep taking them and brought my iron levels up to where they needed to be.

Hey! Not to scare you or anything... but depending on how low you are, you may want to ask for an iron infusion, where they hook you up to an IV for 6 hours pumping it in you. Sounds drastic, but like a PP said, low iron may need a transfusion. Especially if you need a c section.

I was a 7 with dd #1 and then for this on I had an infusion and I am still a happy 12! even with the c section and 50% more blood loss than what they want...

take care!

I'm one of the ones that had to have a transfusion!! My numbers got dangerously low 2 days after giving birth and it wasn't a choice, I had to have a transfusion. I didn't want one and kept telling them to wait and see if the numbers came up, but they never did

I took iron pills my entire pregnancy but I should also note that I lost a lot of blood during birth, though, so that is the biggest reason for the transfusion. Good old retained placenta!
