For me it varied with each child, depending on when they were ready, but it was between 4 and 6 months old with each. You'll know the signs of when your baby is ready - sitting up good, tongue reflex thrusting motion gone, watching you eat and reaching for your food. Good luck!

I started giving my son cereal when he was about five months old. He had been sleeping through the night and started waking up several times a night hungry. Once I started giving him cereal he started sleeping through the night, again. I started giving him cereal at dinner time, than lunch, and than breakfast. I figured he was getting the most milk from me earlier in the day, which is why I started with dinner first.

Logan started at about 5 months. He was READY! He would sit at the table and watch all of us eat and had the most disgusted look on his face! He's not quite 6 months yet and the other night my 4 year old held up her pizza crust to him before I could stop her and he lunged at it! It's better now that he's eating a little cereal but you can still see that he knows there is a difference between what we're eating and what he's eating!

Yes, 4-6 months is what the doctors say. Don't worry if they don't take to it right away. Your breastmilk will still have all the vitamins they need if you child isn't ready. I am sure formula does too, I just don't know for how long. I have heard breasmilk has all the nutrients they need until they are one. I am guessing that formula might not be enough much past 6 months. But I am not a nutritionist.
My 1st 3 were formula fed. And I started them all right around 4 months. I was young, and people who thought you should give them cereal to sleep through the night were pushing me. I actually gave my second child cereal at 3 and a half months. With my 4th child I breastfed, and started her on cereal at 4 months.
I don't beleive in putting cereal in the bottles. If they are ready for cereal, they will be able to swallow it off a spoon.

My DS was ready at 5 mos, DD was closer to 7 mos. DS ate anything and everything, DD didn't care for solids too much, she still would rather have mama's milk than solids but she's got major teeth coming in.

Ok, I'm just lazy I guess... i didn't start either of my first two till around 6 months! I breastfed both of them and having to sit down to feed them was not something I was looking forward to, especially with ds2 when i had my 2 year old son and my sister's 3 girls (1, 3 & 5 year olds).

ds3 is now 4 mos old and I don't plan on starting him anytime soon either... we'll see!!!
