I am a mom of a 19 month old little boy. I have used disposible diapers since he was born and never really given any thought to it. Until recently. It started out as me being tired of spending the money I do on them. I don't buy generic b/c ds seems to get a diaper rash more easily with them and I also think that they leak more than Pampers. But once I really started looking at my different options, I was blown away by the idea that I have created one ton of waste just by using diapers for my son.

I have a two part question.
1. What brand of 'eco-friendly' diaper is the best? I have found Nature babycare, Seventh Generation and Tender Care. Do they work. Are they worth the extra money?
2. Would cloth diapers be better? My mom used them with all three of us girls but alot has changed and she was blown away by the difference in 25 years. I found a 5 pack of Kushies at Walmart for $42.74. Is this a good price? Is there a better brand or one that is as good but cheaper?

I am sorry that this is long, but I know no one that currently uses cloth diapers. If it helps dd was completly potty trained at 26 months and I do plan on training ds very soon. He does tinkle in the potty about 3-4 times a week. TIA

First let me say that I have no idea about the eco friendly diapers. I have never used them. I use cloth diapers on my ds and it has been very easy. For ME, cloth diapering has been very easy. The only times I use disposables are at night (he's a heavy wetter) and when we are going to be gone for awhile during the day.

I use Fuzzi Bunz on ds. They are wonderful. Please be cautious of buying the Kushies brand from Wal-Mart. I was trying to go the cheaper route & bought those first. I was able to return them but was out the costs for shipping. They are plasticy outside & they looked cheap. I could tell they wouldn't let my ds' skin breathe.

If you are unsure if you want to cloth diaper, I would recommend not putting a bunch of money into something you may give up. I first would try the eco friendly diapers to see how they work (Target sells some now...not sure of the brand) Again, for ME cloth diapering has been NO big deal. I have had good experience w/the Fuzzi Bunz & the Happy Heiny.

I'll be happy to answer any questions you have about cloth diapering. Just PM me any you have

I am a cloth diaper'er - I use FuzziBunz exclusively. I just wanted to warn you that right after each of my boys turned 2, I started having leakage problems no matter what I used. I think because they were starting to hold their pee and then would pee a ton at once. I started to have to double the inserts, and use disposables at night at first. Then I had to switch to disposables completely because of the leaking. I am not sure if this is a common problem or not, but two of my CD'ing friends also experienced this. I just wanted to warn you before you invest in cloth diapers at this point. I would never tell someone not to CD, because I love it, but just a word of warning that it does get a bit trickier as they start to get older....

I would agree with the PP in saying be careful of the cheapo diapers. Just as cheap disposables do not compare to the more expensive one, the same thing holds for cloth dipes. I bought a lot of brand new newborn Kushies on eBay, checked them out, and promptly resold them. They are nothing like my FB's! I couldn't imagine putting a 2 year old Kushies if the FB's were giving me trouble. Eeek!

They are an investment at first. A pretty big investment if you are planning to use a better diaper and want a couple of days worth of supply, but I've found that in the end it has been more than worth it. I am not sure at this point in the game if it would be a money saver to you or not, seeing as how your son is already 19 months old.

If I can help you with anything, feel free to PM me. I have been CD'ing for 4 years.

I am not sure about the eco-diapers.

I've seen very inexpensive, handmade diapers on Ebay, made by WAHM. But I don't know if those are as good as the name brands... could someone comment on handmade diapers?
