So my little one (5 weeks old) has an upset belly more often then not. She screams in pain and sometimes manages to pass gas while she is screaming. She has a hard time sleeping and the gas drops don't always work. I don't know what I am eating that she doesn't like. With my first I just noticed I couldn't eat garlic with my second I don't remember what she didn't like. But this one doesn't like almost everything I eat.
Do I need to change my diet to very plain bland food? What can I do to help her feel better when she is gassy and fussy?

Could it be the milk you are drinking? My SIL's baby would be really fussy and it was the milk (she thinks)- her dd is lactose intolerant now.

It is hard to find out what food it is that makes them fussy- though does it appear to be something you are eating daily?- so think about what you eat regularly.

What about giving her the gas drops on a regular basis for awhile- also have you put her on her back and move her legs as if she was riding a bicycle?? This ALWAYS helped with my kids.

Good luck- she will grow out if it soon- I hope

My ds was also gassy. We put the mylicon drops into his nighttime bottles of breastmilk. It really seemed to help. I also laid off really spicy foods and things that might make me gassy. Good luck to you!

Oh I hope it's not milk. We are such big milk drinkers here. My other kids didn't have any problems with milk. Both of my sil kids had milk problems and she couldn't have any dairy while she nursed them.

I have been trying to figure out what it could be. I know I have had a couple dinners this week that caused some of the problem, but she should feel better by now.

I had the same problem with Isaac. Isabell hasn't really had the gas problems, but Isaac does. If I eat anything spicy, he gets very fussy- AND when he went to his last Dr. appt. the Dr. told me to temporarily stay away from dairy. If it helps him, then it's a dairy/lactose problem. If it doesn't seem to make a difference, I'll start consuming dairy again with in the next two weeks. So far it hasn't seemed to make a difference-

For Noah a warm bath and "soaking his belly" would help him a bunch! (along with gas drops) gas drops have been a huge help in this house.

My son was also very gassy and fussy the first few months. I changed my diet to no avail. No drops helped until someone told me to buy gripe water. It was a natural remedy and it worked like MAGIC!!! My son loved the taste and I felt comfy giving it to him. It was truly a miracle for me. I bought it at my local pharmacy but most baby stores carry it. Good luck!!

I agree about the dairy. I didn't know about it and ds had such gassiness, he was put on a prescription. Later, at 4 yrs. of age, we found he did have a sensitivity/slight allergy (which is magnified in infancy) to milk (casein), bananas, eggs and corn. You could try it and see.

BUT

Don't blame yourself if it isn't the cause. Some babies are simply gassy, and Mylicon and all that doesn't do much good. Bicycling the legs will help, but as hard as it is, they have to grow out of it. Their little digestive systems are so immature. You can try modifying your diet - it will be for a short time, in the big picture, as the baby matures you can start putting things back in. But also let the ped. know so anything serious can be ruled out, just in case. Most of it is just a waiting game.

My baby started this also at 2 weeks old. My Dr. advised to give Myilcon after every Breastfeedng and force 3 burps out of him. sometimes it took burping in several different positions and 45 minutes later he would burp. We also had him sleep on a slight incline wedge at night. some nights we would actually have to hold him on our chest at night for anyone to sleep. this problem went on until he was about 10 weeks old. coincidentially, he also had colic from 3-9 weeks. Foods I had to avoid while BF: milk, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, onions, beans, chocolate.

My best friend told me when I was having the same trouble, that peanuts, or peanut butter caused sensitivity in her kids when she was breastfeeding. I toned down my intake, not sure if it helped or not, he has his moments, but that's something you might think about too.

My ds did the same thing. Diagnosed w/ acid reflux at 4 weeks old, put on Zantac. This helped for a while. Then came the horrible, horrible gas. Tried the gas drops, which did nothing. He wouldn't sleep for longer than 20 min. and then he was back up screaming again. I was BF and cut out all dairy and soy products. Finally had an allergy test done and they said that he's not allergic to anything. But just b/c he's not allergic, doesn't mean that he doesn't have an intolerance for it. So I went back to putting a little dairy into my diet, but not much. He's 5 months now and I can eat whatever I want, so it gets better!! BUT, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend a product called Colic Calm (www.coliccalm.com). It's all natural and saved my sanity. I got it for him at 6 weeks. First time he took it, I heard a grumble in his belly and he calmed down and took the longest nap known to man. HA! I have recommended this product numerous times to my friends, and they all love me b/c of it. I have also recommended it on the La Leche Forum, and I've had numerous people tell me how great it works. I'm not selling it (PROMISE!), but am a mother who's been where you are. You feel hopeless, exhausted, and really bad for your poor LO that's in so much pain. This product is by far the best product on the market!!!!
