I am currently 9 weeks pregnant with my third child. DH and I have pretty much decided this is it. Today I went to my first OB appointment. I asked my Dr. about having a c-section and just doing the lubal ligation then, but he said there was no reason for that and that he plans on having me deliver vaginally and then the next day i will go in for surgery and have the tubal ligation.

I am so dreading the fact that I am going to give birth one day and then the next day I will be put under and in surgery. Has anyone ever had this done this way?? Know anything about recovery? how long the surgery took? how long they were in the hospital??

Has your dh ever thought about a vasectomy? it is not major surgery, you go, have the vasectomy, and go home the same day, and the recovery time is alot shorter than having a tubal ligation. Also, a vasectomy is reversible, and a tubal ligation is forever. You then won't have to try to recover (it took me 6weeks from my C-Section and I still have problems) and have to look after a baby and 2 other little ones.

Tubal ligation is also known (by MANY) to cause your cramps to be horrible with your future periods. My ob/gyn highly recommended AGAINST it.

Another option would be an IUD. DH & I are 99% sure we're done having kids, but didn't want to completely close the door in case, God forbid, anything happens to either of the boys or we change our minds. So, I had a copper IUD put in at my 6-week postpartum visit. It is hormone-free, and was easily inserted at the dr. office (plus, my insurance covered all but less than $100 of it), and it lasts up to 10 years.

I had a tubal ligation in 1996. I was 44 years old. The dr. cut in the circle of my belly button. You can harldy see it. I had no problems. It was out patient surgery. I had no pain. They taped the small slit together. I spoted for a few days and felt a little tired. I missed 2 days work. I could not tell any difference in my camps for my periods. I am overweight and thought it might be hard to get a tubal. But my GYN talked me into it. I was going for an IUD and not have surgery. My kids were 16 and 24 and I didn't want any more. The ex had a V and then years later he left me so I met someone and had to make a decision about more babies or no more babies. I don't have any lasting problems from the tubal.

I had a scheduled C-section w/ my second child and a tubal at the same time. I haven't had any problems at all. I wouldn't want to go through child birth then a surgery either.

i'm having my 3rd in over a week and am having it done but i have to have c-section so no extra surgery. i do know however if you wait and decide to have it done later it is a 6 week recovery time frame so if it is done at time of delivery it would be easier on you. obviously the vasectomy would be easiest then and iud.

Thank goodness someone else has the same questions! My DH is "iffy" on having a vasectomy... and I can never get a straight answer from my OB about having a tubal ligation. We are POSITIVE we won't be having any more children... I wouldn't be able to make it through another pregnancy. (I have lost over 30 lbs and had to quit my job due to this current one) I am about to pop any day now, according to my doc yesterday... but she was so concerned with my migraines and weight loss that I (pregnant brain) totally forgot to ask again!
My question about a vasectomy is this... my DH is an abnormally fast healer, and is "afraid" it wouldn't take, or that he will heal over it! He also says that I should be fixed, cause he has never had any type of surgery other than dental. Yes, he is a wuss! :D
I even suggested we both get fixed, to try to ease his mind. And because we want to make absolutely SURE this is the last pregnancy.
Any suggestions?

There are two types of IUD's...One is a 5 year one, and the other is a 10 year one. Check those out, too!!

I just had this done- 2 months after my ds was born. My dr. said he could do it about an hour or so after the delivery- the only reason I did not do it then was because I have a large fibriod they were hoping to take out and needed to wait for my uterus to drop to get it.

To answer your ?- they put a small cut in my belly button and one on the bikini line- I went in to day surgery and was out and headed home in about 3 hours. I was a little sore though in my upper arm area (they say this is the normal pain) and it lasted about 2 days. My adbominol area never bothered me. It really was not a problem.
Good luck
