To all of you great mommies out there-
I know that I am probably just an overworried first time mother and that all children reach the developmental milestones at a different age... but with that said -I am wondering about when should a child say their first word. My son is currently 10mo. and only babbles? Just wondering. Thanks in advance.

my daughter started to babble around 8 months and started "saying" little words that would mean things around 10 or 11 months. Like..."abaah" for bath, and "mumum" for mom and "da" for dad. I also started signing w/ her around 9 or 10 months.

She just turned a year old. She can sign: eat, more, milk, all done. Now that she seems to understand words like "no"..when I say them that is...I'm starting to teach her signs for: help, wait, diaper, toy, and book.

Of course they are her versions on the signs...plus I have a great video. "Signing Time." It's the best signing stuff for kids and babies I have found! Each DVD is about a half an hour long and all the signs are grouped together and there is a song w/ each grouping. It really attracts the children and it makes it easier for me to remember the signs so we can sing them in the car. I have found that she is learning. There is one song about pets and it has animal sounds and we went to a pet store recently..she saw the dogs and started "woofing"....it was really cute! She was also "meowing" at my MIL's cats!

You can find these DVD's at Amazon.com...by the way. They are wonderful and she is starting to mimic tones and sounds she hears on the DVD...plus from our own words. She seems to almost mimic us at times.

She still does babble to herself when she plays and is very "sing songy." Mostly I hear words come out when she is distressed and wants something. It won't be long until we have a talker on our hands!

Rhyl started mumbling "mamamama" at 6 months, which I know means next to nothing right now, but is very heartwarming! She's 7 1/2 months now, and we're trying to get her to say "papa" (that's dh). It's coming along. She mouths and whispers it, but hasn't really come out with it yet. But she's really babbling good with other sounds. Relax--I'm sure your babe's just taking it all in before he starts giving it back.

Logan, at 8 months, is babbling big time. It started with Ga-ga-ga, then Da-da-da (my husband was thrilled) and now it is Ba-ba-ba and just this morning Bla-bla-bla. Though already he's pretty good at communicating his needs. If I walk by and he wants to be picked up, he'll grunt to get my attention and then hold out his arms to be picked up!

My daughter? I think she was about this age as well when she started with the sounds - though she hit Ma-ma-ma before the Da-da-da. Of course now that she is four and is very capable of saying, "Parasaurolophus" which I had problems myself saying!

I'd like to tell you that don't worry because they really all are different but I know with my daughter (my first born) I worried all the time. I'm way more laid back with my son. In fact I still find that I worry more about my daughter. You'd think I'd just get over it!

My DS loves Signing Time!! He gets smiles from ear to ear and starts jumping just seeing me get the DVD ready. He doesn't actually sign much, as far as I can tell, though he's been watching them for several weeks (usually one 30-min DVD per day). He did "milk" for awhile, then stopped. He babbles a lot, and says all variations of mamama and bababa and dadada and whatnot, but I can't really tell if he has certain combinations for certain things, yet. I probably won't even recognize the first real word.

my daughter's been saying dada since like 6 months, I think she figured out what it meant around 8 months. She is almost 1 year and she can say "dada" "moo" "woof" and I swear she said "grandma" the other day when I was telling her we were going to grandma's. I haven't really recognized any other words yet.
She absolutely refuses to say "mama"
