My baby's doctor said to start cereal, to start with riceonce a day, building up to three times, after a little, then I can try the other cereals, oatmeal and barley... I was wondering how long you fed the rice cereal for before moving on to another? And which should I try next? I was told after he made it through some boxes of that, I could start fruits, the orange colors, then green. Quite excited, and while I don't want to rush or push him into solids, I do wonder about the cereals.

I have yet to go through a full box of cereal and it's 7 months later. I started with rice cereal and did that one for about a week (there's a 3-5 day wait rule when introducing any new food) then moved on. I did each cereal for about a week first but I mainly used it more as a filler for when the food was too runny. As far as when to start fruits and veggies (and their order) theres a debate about that. It sounds like your pediatrician has a set way of doing things. Here's a link I used for when Am was young (I made my own food). My son didn't like the rice cereal. I have only given him oatmeal. I used to use juice to mix it.

With my son, I started him on rice cereal and kept him on it for about 1 month. I introduced the oatmeal to him, which he did not like. So I switched back to the rice for another month or so. Then I tried a mixed grain cereal. He likes the mixed grain but still will not eat the oatmeal kind. Funny though, because he will eat bites of my Dh's oatmeal in the morning! hope this helps

I did rice cereal, then barley, and then the oatmeal. I was told to do the oatmeal last. I don't remember why though.

Thans for the links!! We are planning on making our own food, well, I am anyway, once baby has gotten past stage 1. I figure by that time, we have the eating thingdown and if there's a little more texture to the foods, will be ok. Never owned a food processor so not sure how good they puree, but from what I've read, should work out pretty well time wise for me!!

We started all four on rice and it varied for how long they ate that soley. One didn't like it at all so after a few days we went on to oatmeal and she loved it. One didn't like any cereal but rice. I don't think any were eating only cereal for more than a couple weeks. And we varied what foods we tried and didn't stick to the fruits last which a lot do as they think it causes the child to have a sweet tooth and not like vegetables if they do that. My kids all love vegetables so it wasn't true for us! Sounds like your doctor doesn't abide by that either.

Have fun introducing new foods to your little one!

My girls liked the cereal that had banana flakes. I started w/rice & bananas and then went to oatmeal and bananas.
