I am very paranoid in my first trimester of pregnancy- well really, the entire time. This is my third baby, but I am really worried because I became pregnant while on birth control. I've heard this increases the risk of miscarriage. I've been having a slight pain in the right side of my groin for three days, and all last night and this morning back and leg pain like I usually have during my period. I am going in for an ultrasound tomorrow anyways, to check sizes and confirm my date but can someone tell me signs of miscarriage...other than bleeding. Thanks.

No advice just wanted to say good luck at your US. Amazing how these little people cause us to worry even before they are born. I worry too.

You didn't say exactly how far along you were, but the pain can be simple and normal muscle stretching and ligament relaxation. I had some w/my daughter, then bled clumps that were a quarter size. I was sure I had another miscarriage, and was actually going to cancel my Dr. appt the next day. However, when I went in, I asked to test for a heartbeat, just in case, but was certain there was going to be none. She fooled me!! Now she's a chubby 13 month old after a fairly uneventful pregnancy (except for pain!!). Unfortunately, as you probably know, you can't predict or really prevent a miscarriage. Just take care of you and baby and rest. Fingers crossed for you!!

I was very paranoid with my 2nd one because I had had a miscarriage 2 months prior, but it was just stretching! Good luck!

The more babies I had, the more I felt those aches and even sharp pains. I panicked the first pregnancy it was like that...only to be told it was perfectly normal and to expect it for the whole pregnancy..and they were right!! I wouldn't worry yet. Your doctor will be able to tell you more, but I think that as long as there is no bleeding, you are good.

As a mom of eleven, I can tell you that it is common to have aches like that in early pregnancy. Your body is doing lots to prepare for the growth of this new little one! Also, it is not uncommon for people to get pregnant while on the pill. And while miscarriage CAN occur because of it, I don't think it is a norm.

Try to relax and enjoy this pregnancy.

I had that stretching too. Let me tell you a funny story...I was in my first trimester and as paranoid as you can get after having had a miscarriage on September 23, 2004. Anyway, I started having this weird cramping that just would not stop. So, I called the dr's office and the nurse, who probably thought I was nutso, gave me some advice. I followed her advice and the cramping went away. IT WAS GAS!!!! Afterwards, we all got a good laugh about it.

I remember asking my doctor about lower back pain during my last pregnancy as I had just had a miscarriage a few months before and I remembered having unusual back pain a couple of days before the bleeding started. Basically what she told me was that back pain (or cramping) in and of itself is not usually a sign of miscarriage. If you were to have bleeding (blood clots) AND cramping, then you might have cause to be worried. Even bleeding during pregnancy though is not a sure sign of miscarriage. When I started passing blood clots the doctor told us that our chances of miscarriage were 50/50 - but as desertmom said, you can even pass blood clots and still carry a successful pregnancy.

I would agree with everyone else...pregnancy is full of aches and pains...and you have more of them with each pregnancy.

Once there is a heartbeat, your miscarriage risk goes down to 5% and after the first 12 weeks or so I believe it goes down to 3%. Best of luck and please let us know how the ultrasound goes.
