the smaller the better- just like a handbag, the bigger it is, the more crap you'll find to put in it! That said- I had 2. A smaller one for everyday and a bigger one for day and overnight trips.

I used a big one, which I kept supplied and in the car, and then used a smaller one to take with me, refilled when needed from my car supply (or at home, if convenient). I liked having two for that reason. As baby aged, I started using the smaller one more and more.

I have three kids. With the first one I had a really nice Land's End bag that had pockets for everything. I used it a bit with the second one but then it got kind of gross from things spilling in it and I ended up using this small black bag that I got from Enfamil at the hospital. With the third kid I used the Enfamil bag for a couple of months but ended up throwing it out when it got gross and then just threw some diapers and wipes in my car.

...so, I guess the answer is that you don't need a big diaper bag! By the way, my kids are close together so I had two in diapers for a time with each bag!

I have three kids ages 2, 4 and 5. I'm pregnant with my 4th. NO you don't even need a diaper bag on most days. I see parents of one child with HUGE diaper bags and I'm always laughing inside b/c I mean come on what all do you need when you are only away from home an hour! LOL I haven't carried a bag since my first one was a few months old. I just have a small tote in the car filled with some diapers and wipes I leave it in the car. Unless you are going out of town or overnight, you can just carry your purse and leave the bulky stuff in a tote bag in the car.

Not to make fun of anyone, but you can always tell the first time parents in the grocery store because they are the ones with the huge diaper bags. I heard an employee at BJ's laughing one time saying, "what do they HAVE in there anyway?" Seriously, if my baby had a messy diaper I'd change him in the car before I'd change him in a dirty restroom!

Personally, I always liked the freebies they gave out at the hospital. I would not spend money on one.
