WIC is a program of the USDA Food and Nutrition Services. There may be some variation from state to state and county to county. I was a contracted employee for Indiana WIC, and these guidelines are consistent with what I observed in our local office.

It is definitely worth the time and effort to get qualified. They are a tremendous source of education and support in nutritional matters as well.

Edited to add: Here is the Indiana program link: http://www.govbenefits.gov/govbenefi...ow_1bid= 2059.

I might add that I have never heard of anyone who felt belittled by WIC staff. All staff that I have worked with are very supportive and non-judgmental.
I agree The wic ladies are nice. They can be a little weird at times but I think it was just them. They were always cheerful and not judgemental. It was more of a hassle for me to go but its not that bad. I forgot about the "Medical Requirement" But usally they will find one.

Our twins have been on Wic since I was pregnant. It helped SO much with formula, you wouldn't believe it. We got tons since we were getting it for 2. We also got baby juice and cereal for them as well.

They are 4 and here is what we get. 11 gallons of milk, can be whole, skim etc. We keep them on whole since they are small for their age. We also get 8 46 oz. jugs of juice, it has to be 100% juice, I get Juicy Juice. 4 dozen eggs, 72 oz. of Wic approved cereal-kix, Mini Wheats, Banana Nut Crunch, Honey Bunches of oats, those are their favorites but there are many more to choose from. 1 lb. dried beans and 1 jar peanut butter. We choose for 1 boy to get beans and 1 to get peanut butter. You can also exchange some of the milk and get cheese instead but we choose not to do that. We buy cheese at Aldi's so it's cheaper.

We have to go twice a year to get certified and once every 3 months to get checks, we get 3 months at a time. When the child(ren) is (are) infants you just get certified once for the yr.

It helps tremendously!!! Especially the milk. We can even get choc. milk if it's either the same or cheaper than the least expensive white milk. Does that make sense?

Our boys qualify for the biggest food package since they are under weight and were premature. I do like that they check their iron levels and weigh them twice a year.

THis is their last yr. for being on it. They can stay on it until they are 5. Oh, and this is for the state of Indiana. HTH!!!

HTH Have a great day,
you still get peanut butter until you no longer get WIC (usually when the child is five) You will not get Tuna and carrots anymore after you discontinue breastfeeding or until the child is 1. Also hasn't everyone changed over to the WIC bridge card yet?

In missouri if you are on medicaid you automatically get WIC. It is helpful while your pregnant but REALLY helpful if you formula feed. On an average month WIC gives me $150 worth of formula and I buy $25 worth myself! They also have lactation consaltents and nutrionists you can talk to. Here you can use it at shop n save, walmart, schnucks, and dierbergs... I think that is it.

Here in Montana anyways you can't get Peanut Butter until they are 2 years old. Something about peanut allergy risks.

They were very helpful when DS needed a special formula. I only had one bad experience with them because the woman didn't like the fact that I was not BF DS and gave me her opinion on non-BFers. I reported her and that was it. I stopped using them because they won't allow you to get organic milk. If you need it go for it.

This is truley something that is state by state. I can see just by reading these posts how different they are.

In PA, (per month. but split between 3 checks) you get 4.5 gallons milk, 4 46oz containers juice, 18 oz peanut butter (or 1 lb dried beans - we opt for the PB), 2 dozen eggs, 36 oz WIC-approved cereal, 1 lb cheese. When you're pregnant/nursing, you get tuna and carrots on top of that. You also get $20 (4 $5 vouchers) for the Farmer's Market.

I wish they could do something with vegetable plants -- they have such a great yield and are very cheap to put together (soil/seed/container), not to mention the health benefits. Not everyone has a green thumb or the space to put the plants, but they could give out information on how to container garden and give a $10-$15 voucher for vegetable plants at local greenhouses/gardening centers. I guess it's just wishful thinking!

I am also on WIC. My two boys and I (since I am prego) are on it and we get a tone of stuff. I live in Wyoming and my kids are on it until they are 5. Moms are on it as long as they nurse or if you are formula feeding, then 6 months postpartum. Right now, I get milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, peanut butter, and juice. Once the baby is born and I am nursing, they add more milk, dried beans, carrots, and tuna. When the baby is old enough, they add baby cereal and baby juice and formula if you need it. Also, I heard, at least in Wyoming, that they are thinking about adding fruits and veggies to our plan. I am hoping that is true!!!

Check it out! It is an awesome program and I love it! We get like 18 gallons of milk a month right now and we use every last drop!
