My DS was breastfed a little over a year exclusively. Breastmilk is sweet, so when I changed him over to milk the only "adjustment issue" I had was he didn't want it. It wasn't sweet enough. I decided to put a little bit of juice in his milk to see if that helped. He LOVED it. I just started slowly putting less and less juice until now he barely has any in it (but he has to see me add atleast SOME juice or he throws a fit! lol).

Something to think about when it comes to changing to "cow's milk". You decide if "organic" is important or not TO YOU. I personally buy Horizon's Organic Milk from CVS. It's not much more than the regular milk (but this is only true at CVS). It's 2.79 for a half gallon VS. 3.99 for a gallon. Why I like it is because it has added DHA for brain development. I plan on giving him this until he's 2. Then I may keep it or change.

There have been some things in the news talking about hormones injected in cows & it leaking into the milk & children having complications with this. Such as boys getting little boobs, etc. I know that Borden & the store brand milk at CVS is "Hormone free" and of course if you buy organic it will be too. I know that Great Value brand milk does NOT say hormone free. That is something to keep in mind too.

Sorry response is long. Who knew there would be so much information on something as simple as milk!

Alot of people mix formula and whole milk when they switch, slowly lowering the amount of formula in the mixture.

Personally, I just gave it to my kids and they drank it. We never had any problems. My first 3 kids drank whole milk exclusively from the age of 6 months because that is what the drs used to tell you to have them do. They all did just fine. I did keep my younger 4 kids on formula until they were a year and then switched to whole milk. Personally, I don't see a reason for buying organic and never have. But that is a personal decision you have to make for you and your family.

I started adding whole milk to my daughter's bottle at 1 year. I started with 1/4 and moved up. She loved it and it wasn't a problem.

I buy Horizon Organic. I have the option of not giving my girls hormones and pesticides. If I couldn't do organic, I would at least do hormone free.

I just switched ds to organic milk. He is 22 months and had a hard time digesting it when he tried it at 1 year, so his doctor told me to wait until he was closer to 2. He seems to be tolerating it ok.

Another thing, I also use Horizon milk and if you go to their website Horizon Organic - Organic Dairy, Family Farmers, Organic Recipes, Kids' Activities and sign up, you can print off coupons.

Our cow's milk in our grocery store is hormone free so I just buy that. I can't afford the organic milk. I gave DD a bottle of just mlik (2 oz) and she drank it just fine. But for a whole bottle (6 oz) I give her 3 oz whole milk and 3 oz formula. I started doing this at the end of April/beginning of May-she will be 1 July 3. To be honest I did it so I didn't have to spend as much on formula. We just don't have the finances. However, now she's down to only 2 bottles a day and most of the time its all formula becuase I keep forgetting the milk!

A friend of mine is on WIC and she started her twins on milk (white AND chocolate!). She told the WIC people that and they didn't have a problem with them drinking it at 9 months.

Thanks for all the input. DS had a bottle of milk day before yesterday and drank it down just fine! woo hoo - no more formula!! His diapes were a little *different* but hopefully that is just a short adjustment to the milk.

I'm trying to get DS to drink milk, but he doesn't like it at all. I'm not exactly sure how big of a deal it really is. He eats lots of cheese and yogurt, so he's getting all that calcium, and he's well hydrated because he drinks water all day long. I still breastfeed him, but only once a day (10 minutes tops). I'm going to be asking the doctor about it next month at his 15-month checkup.
