I have been applying Aveeno baby sunblock on my baby for at least a month now. Everytime we have been out to the park or long walks or pretty much anywhere, that she may have some sun I apply sunscreen on her. She is never in direct sunlight but I do it anyway. I just read in one of my parenting magazines, that it is dangerous to use sunblock on babies under 6 months old. Is that true??? I have been using without realizing that it may not be good for her. I'm kind of freaking out now!!! She hasn't had any sort of allergic reaction or anything. Should I call the dr??????

Can anyone tell me why this may be dangerous????

Everything you put on your skin is absorbed to some degree. I think that newborns are probably more susceptible to harsh ingredients.

They have been recommending sunscreen for 6 months and up. So I would call my Dr. to get the latest info from them. And I'd use Zinc Oxide or Parsol 1789, than other chemicals.

The best sunblock on babies 6 months and up is Baby Blanket Sunblock. Its SPF 50 and it has a bunch of positive reviews (both consumer and physican).

Babies skin is so thin that anything that is put on it gets absorbed. This is why they advise against the sunblock. Their skin needs time to thicken up and help keep harmful things out. Which also makes it important for them to stay out of the sun all together when they are so young. The harmful UVA/UVB rays can really do damage to a young infant.

Just do your best to keep baby out of the sun (like you're already doing) and stop using your sunblock. Call your doctor and see what they have to say.

When we went camping last year to yellowstone I had asked my DR. about sunscreen and she said it was better to keep Sammy out of the sun but if we were going to be hiking around and whatnot to use the sunscreen. It is better to use the sunscreen than for the child to get sunburned.
