DH and I are going camping this weekend. I'm not sure how excited I am for it right now but I'm trying to be. Its for our anniversary.

Is bug spray ok to use during pregnancy? I know you're not suspossed to use it on babies, but I wasn't sure since the skin abosrbs so much. What are your thoughts?

I chose to use the Lemon Eucalyptus Oil spray (got it at walmart, made by Repel) and I only sprayed it on my clothes. I tried not to breathe it in either. It worked well for me. I personally don't like DEET, so I still use the Lemon Eucalyptus stuff, but I put it on me too.

I don't know the answer to that question, but I thought I would let you know that Avons bug spray doesn't have DEET in it. It has something called IR3535. I don't know what that is, but they say it is safer. It is still a chemical though. They also have a new spray with Picardin, which I think is safer yet, but I feel it doesn't work as good. I just use Bug Guard Plus Expidition for night time. During the day I use the stuff with the sunblock added to it.

I never spray it on me ( skin) I always was taucht to spray a hat and wear it... or your shoes or even the chair you are sitting in. or the blanket you will put on you by the fire, and a sweatshirt or jacket that you will be wearing.

If I remember correctly, you'll be entering your third trimester when you go camping. If so, I'd use the bug spray without worry. It is better to expose the baby to minute chemicals than have mommy come down with West Nile.

And keep in mind, it will probably be two or three years before hubby can reasonably expect you to go camping again.

When I was pregnant with my first I specifically asked my OBGyn about using bug spray with DEET in it. Her recommendation was to avoid it as much as possible. She's usually pretty laid back about most things so when she tells me not to do something - I typically try to pay attention. That being said, I have used it sparingly when I felt like the risk from the bugs outweighed the risk from the DEET but as previous posters mentioned, I tried to keep it more on my clothing and off of my skin as much as possible. There are products out there that don't contain DEET. I would recommend checking one of those out.

I think that DEET has/is a chemical that is actually a neurotoxin, so I'd use it sparingly. That said, West Nile is a nasty, nasty ordeal and can affect the baby so much more. I personally would use it with long sleeves and pants and not on my face. Hope you have fun!
