Yesterday I went to the doctor and he told me that there was a high level of sugar in my urine sample they tested.
Does anyone know if this means I have gestational diabetes? I feel fine, no dizziness, not overly thirsty, no blurry vision. I've had headaches but they are from my sinus infection I'm trying to get rid of.
He asked me what I ate and I told him...roast beef sandwich w/pepper jack cheese on wheat, cup of chicken noodle soup. The only thing I can think of is I had some red hot dollars after that...that's gummy candy, maybe 10-15 pieces. Could that have raised my level up?
Seriously, I eat fairly healthy...mostly veggies and fruits and oatmeal or bran flakes, alot of chicken. But I do eat other things too, like I made macadamia nut cookies that other day and of course, no one else really helped out alot to eat them, fortunately, it was a very small batch (maybe dozen) and I didn't eat all the cookies at one time. But for the most part, I eat healthy stuff.
Has anyone experienced this when pregnant? Can the sugar level be normal next month? Do you think it was just what I ate yesterday?
I'm getting worried because both my other kids were big babies, especially ds at 9-1/2 lbs. Doc said babies over 9 lbs can signal diabetes.

I have no idea - what did your doctor suggest it could be and how worried was he?
My last baby was 9 pounds 12 ounces. She was huge! She was born 3 days before her due date. My other kids were 8 pounds 6 1/2 ounces, born 3 weeks early; 8 pounds 8 ounces, born 2 weeks early; 6 pounds 5 ounces, born 4 weeks early. So each of them, except maybe the 6 pounder who would have been close, would have been 9 pounds or more if they'd gone closer to their due dates and yet, I didn't have gestational diabetes with any of them and don't have diabetes now. Some of us just have big babies!
ETA that I'm now 19 weeks 4 days and my baby is already measuring big so I'm sure I'm in for another whopper!

The concern is the sugar in the urine could be a sign of gestational diabetes. A couple of times during my last pregancy I had high sugar in my urine at my ob visit. Each time it was after I had eaten something sugary right before my appt. My glucose challenge test at 28 weeks came back normal. My son was 8lbs 1 oz when he was born at 38 weeks.

Thanks for your replies. I am starting to feel better now. I don't think there was ever sugar in my urine test before with the other kids or at least the doctor didn't tell me there was. When I tested for gd, the first tests came back high, but the 3 hour test came back very normal.
Freebiemom, we must be right around the same weeks. I think I am 19 weeks, 3 days according to the doctor office. I had an ultrasound last Thursday and the baby weighed approx. 9 oz. and the doc said that was normal range. I read each week the weekly developments and it said the average weight is 8.5 oz now so at least this baby isn't big yet.
Bonnots, that is what I did yesterday, ate something sugary before I went.
My regular doc keeps talking about gd, since I had the big babies...and it's really irritating to me, but the specialist said some women are prone to have big babies and nothing is wrong with them and that's ok.
And, Oregano, I did ask my doctor yesterday a lot of questions about it, but he didn't give me any answers. He doesn't let me know alot of stuff, even when I ask.
I'm loosing my confidence in my doc each time I go there.

I'm not sure about sugar in the urine, but my bloodwork always came back that I needed to do the 3-hour glucose tests. I had to do them with both pregnancies. After further testing, I came out clear. My advice would be not to worry until you have something to worry about. Even with gestational diabetes, you can go on to have a successful pregnancy with monitored care.

Yep, I had to have the 3 hr. test both times, too, and passed them. On the last one, I didn't know they were going to pull blood for it at my checkup, and had a p-nut butter and jelly sandwich and a glass of chocolate milk for lunch beforehand. No wonder it rang high! So yes, those red dots can make your sugar spike.
I was told that a couple of the dangers of gest. diab. is having a big baby, so they would monitor its growth, and it could be a sign that you are more likely to get diabetes later in life.
It can be controlled w/diet, so don't worry too much. The 3 hr. test is really nothing, except that you have to fast and the orange drink they give you is supersweet. Some places even use some kind of jellybeans, or so I've heard. Just monitor your sweet intake carefully for about 2 days before the test and drink lots of water (which will also help with the blood draw, as dehydration can make the veins hard to get to).

I had sugar in my urine druing my last pregnancy and I passed the first gluclose test. Sometime it has to do with what you ate. At my next visit, it was normal. Dont stress too much-thats not good for you or the baby.
If you're not happy with your doctor switch NOW! Don't let it get too late in your pregnancy. And if you're not happy now just think what you'll be like when you're in labor for 8 or 9 hours and he's like "oh your ok, just a little longer"! You really won't be happy with him then!

If you are really concerned about watching your sugar, I would suggest buying an inexpensive blood glucose meter (walgreens has an excellent one for around $20). You can go to diabetes.org and learn how to test your blood sugar on a daily basis (i.e. what your numbers should be before and after eating). It would give you a way to find out how different foods affect your blood sugar.

The bread and noodles are fast carbs, which can spike your blood sugar, added to the candy, the meat and cheese wasn't enough to balance it out and slow it down. If you want to keep from having a blood sugar spike, never eat straight carbs. Always have protein and fat with them.
The sugar showing up in your urine means that there wasn't enough insulin produced to use the sugar, so you peed it out. If you hadn't eating a bunch of carbs right before the test, then it could be an indicator that you could be developing gd. But truthfully, I wouldn't worry, unless it is happening on a regular basis. Remember to eat carefully before you go in for your next appt. Balance your carbs with your protein and fat (ideal balance would be 40/30/30) and try to go with low glycemic index carbs (do a google search for "glycemic index" to find a list). If it shows up again after being more careful what you eat, then I would certainly push for more tests. GD should be caught early for the best prognosis.
