I also used a nipple shield with ds, but he never latched from the beginning, I understand your frustration!
Cool compresses are supposed to help with the engorgement.
Do you have access to a pump? If you do, try pumping a little to relieve some of the engorgement and then see if she can get on, she's probably having a hard time getting on the engorged nipple.
Also, try expressing a few drops onto your nipple and see if she tries harder when she smells and tastes the milk.

I just found this, she says how to soften your areola to help the baby latch on
Engorgement: Newborn can't latch on

I know when I BF my youngest and was engorged she had a harder time
I would pump a little to relieve it and that seemed to help.
Not sure if it will or not but thats the best advice I can give you.
good luck

yup, try to express some milk

remember to bring the baby to your boob, not the boob to baby

also, baby is prob tired too, and since you had a c section and prob on drugs ( I know that I was ) baby gets tired easy

do you have a nurse there that can help you?

don't give up, don't get frusterated. baby will get it... it may take some crying from both of you, but it will happen.

If baby is tired, try taking off her shirt, say soothing things to wake her up

do you have a boppy? that was a great help, and was nice from my incision
it also seemed to get baby in the right position

hugs and good luck

I didn't realize they sold these to the general public anymore. In all the breastfeeding training I've attended (I contracted with our local WIC program as a lactation consultant), we were told to never recommend a mother use a BF shield without the supervision of a lactation consultant. It can be incredibly difficult to wean the baby from the shield once s/he is used to it.

We always recommended hand expressing enough milk to soften the areola and allow baby a better latch. Be sure to save what you express in the freezer.

You can also pump a little before each feeding, but BE CAREFUL how much you pump because you could end up adding to the problem! The more milk you take out, the more milk your body will make causing even more engorgement.

If you are uncomfortable you can wear cool cabbage leaves in your bra. I know it sounds funny, but it's cool and contains a chemical that let's the breast leak enough milk to become comfortable. If you crumple the leaf before you use it, it will release more of the chemical.

A cool washcloth over the breasts feels good, too. They also make cool packs you can put in your bra if you get desperate.

Some ladies have had success using a breast shell (different than a shield). You wear it in your bra prior to feeding baby and it causes the nipple to stick out more (milk will also leak into the shell).

like everyone else said express some milk to get a little more grab for the baby. Also if you hold your brea st so that you squeeze closer to you n ipple and kida rotate it upwards it will help baby latching on. I hope that made sense. Also try a football hold taht was the best way for me to get dd to latch on. Also try to relax as much as possible this wil also help. If you need help have dh help getting the baby in a good position and I would also recoment a good nursing pillow.

Sam ~ The most important thing for you to do is to try to relax! I know that it is hard to do because it is so easy to stress out when the baby doesn't latch on! In the hospital I tried a breast shield (at one nurses request) and then I stopped per another nurses request.

Every nurse and every person that came in to try to help had different techniques. At first I would pump (with an electric pump) to get the milk to flow. When I was really engorged I had to pump to relieve them a little so that she could latch on. If you take a warm shower that relieves them to, but you can only do this if you know that you have time before you have to feed her.

I also would squeeze my nipple flat to make it easier for her to latch on. The first few weeks were so much trouble that at times I wanted to give up, but I didn't! And now it is working great for us(knock on wood!).

I also found that feeding on demand really works for us. (Which I am so relieved about because with ds breastfeeding did not go well AT ALL!!!!)

I don't know if any of this will help you. Good Luck! Try not to give up!

You can do it girl! Don't give up! I had engorgement problems with all three boys. With Bradley I put warm/hot water in the double sink and leaned over and expressed abit of milk out. With Shane and Sammy I used a pump to express some. Both ways helped alot. Also, try to use different positions, ie: football hold. The football hold was just about the only way Bradley nursed. I have always had a Boppy pillow and loved it.
