There is a woman who goes to my church who is still breastfeeding her 2 1/2 year old son.

Is this the norm?

In other countries yes it's the norm, but I also factor in the fact than in some of thsoe countries the child would starve if it wasn't for the breastmilk.

My standard for is if the child is in school. There was an 8 year old on Youtube being breastfed.

I remember a sitcom where the guy said if the kid is old enough to undo the bra with one hand it is time to quit.

I didn't breastfeed ds, but I have always wondered the same thing . . . when do you stop. Ds is 2 now, and he definitely knows what "tatas" are, so I can't even imagine a mother doing it at this age. Wouldn't you just pump?

i watched a talk show once where they had a lady breastfeeding her 6 year old. much more than 2 1/2, although i wouldn't do 2 1/2 either! The lady on the show kept saying that her children would stop when they were ready to. I beleive she also home schooled them, so how would they know when it is appropriate to stop if that's all that they ever know with no outside influence? it seems like they would have some lasting mental problems from breastfeeding for that long...

I did till just about 2. And I got tons of grief about it for a year before hand. You are not hurting your child, though at THAT age, I would save that for home, privately. I don't think I could have done it much longer than that though, when I weaned ds, I really really just needed him to be done. I needed a break from it.

There are a lot of advocates for self-weaning, and if people are comfortable with that, then more power to them. I know I couldn't breastfeed my child after the age of 3 probably. My oldest was 14-1/2 months when I stopped nursing, and that was perfect. She was ready, I was ready, and the wean was easy. The twins never nursed, but I pumped until Lily came home from the hospital (6 months), and then I was done.

I personally think two is acceptable. I nursed ds 1 yr and 3 months. My DH was ready for me to stop but told me to do it in my own time. It was hard for me to quit because it is a bonding experience--but I knew it had to be done at some time so I might as well go ahead. Now that DS is a little over 2, I think it would weird for me to nurse him....but when you are in the middle of nursing it's hard to see them as anything but a baby. KWIM?

There is a group of mothers near me who believe in BF til a least 5. I am sorry but when a child can as for it by name, it is time to disconnect.

I actually know a woman here that did that. She's one my closest friend now. She's Samoan and her youngest son and my DD is one week apart. Anyway I think she told me one time that she breastfeed her daughter (same age with my DS born 2006) until she gave birth to her son which was November of last year. I didn't even know you can still produce milk when you are pregnant. About a year and half she did that I guess it didn't bother her that her daughter already had teeth. But she didn't mind it though

Okay, I went and looked up that video, and frankly I find it very disturbing.
