Hi everyone. I just found this site today. Well, I'm here in El Paso, TX, which is very new to me, we just transferred here from Ft. Campbell, KY. It is a lot different here, that's about all I can say. I have two children, Angel, who just turned four yesterday, and Zach who will be one on the 19th. If there is anyone else in the El Paso area, I would love to chat with you, maybe find out a little more about the area! It will be nice to talk to other moms on here! Have a great day everyone.

Looks like you're not far from where I am!! I live in Deming, NM., which is only about an hour northwest of you.

You mentioned that you "transferred to El Paso", so I'm assuming your husband (or you) are in the military. My husband is in the Guard, presently, but will soon be getting a medical discharge.

There's so much to do in El Paso! I've lived in NM. for about 3 years now, and we've been to El Paso 4 times. A few times we went to the airport, and once was to visit the VA hospital, so these really doesn't count as a "fun visits", but I've been wanting to take my daugther to the zoo there, and do some shopping, of course!! (ha ha)

You'll find that Las Cruces isn't that far away from you (about an hour to the north) which is where I do most of my shopping at large retailers. So, I know my way around Las Cruces alot better than I do El Paso. (Sorry, can't really help you in finding your way around in El Paso...)

If there's anything I can help you with about the area let me know! My first suggestion to you (for leisure activities) is to check out the Gila National Forest! It's my family's favorite place to go on weekends! (It's only about 50 miles north of me.) It would be WELL worth the drive for you...if you like beautiful, scenic wilderness and Native American history.

Again, Welcome to Mommy Savers! You'll find the best bunch of pepole here!
As a warning though...Mommy Savers is ADDICTING!! SO many areas to explore!!
Have fun and post often so we can get to know you!!

Lisa...

Yeah, my husband is in the Army here at Ft. Bliss. He was in Iraq, last year, conveniently during my entire pregnancy...ha ha. I don't think he will have to deploy again though, hopefully. We did take my daughter to the zoo here for her birthday, over the weekend since the in laws were here. Which only took us two hours to walk around the entire thing, which was shocking. I don't think I have ever walked around an entire zoo. They are expanding it, and putting in an Africa part to it. So far all they have is Americas, and Asia. And in parts you have to walk around some of the construction areas. But my daughter had a great time, especially at the sea lion exhibit. I haven't been too far into El Paso so far, but I've heard there are a lot of things to do. So, I'm sure I will get used to it. Thanks for the tip on the gila national forest, sounds like a great idea, if I can talk my husband into it! Ha! And I have been on this site all day long, you are very right about it being addicting!!!!

Your welcome, Jennifer! I suggest making a whole day of it when you go up to the Gila. I have yet to make it to the Cliff Dwellings, but it's on my list for this summer! We got as close as the parking lot for it, but decided since it was a 1-mile hike up there (and then back again) it was getting too late to strike out on that venture that day. We love to stay in the cabins up there for the weekends, and I can suggest some to you if you'd like. It's just amazing to me that only ONE HOUR North of my house (in the desert) is this WHOLE OTHER WORLD! It's just beautiful! You'd be amazed at the mountains, although you said you lived in KY., right? You're probably used to seeing such things then. I'm originally from Chicago (by way of FL, and Northwest OK) so mountains are my "new love"!! (ha ha) I hope to buy property up there one of these days. I want to live there now!!

I heard once that the El Paso Zoo was known for the worst elephant habitat in the country, or that the treated their elephants very poorly. This is one reason why we havn't visited, as I believe that if you fund a zoos' ill treatment of animals it's like condoning it, and they will continue. What was your impression of the elephant habitat? Did they look mistreated in any way?
