It cost 20 cents to list an item and a 3.5% transaction fee this is taken out when you sell an item, and then there is a fee if you use pay pal as a form of taking credit cards. There are some who sell well on this site. And I would highly suggest reading the forums on the etsy site especially the business topics.
There are a high number of sellers on this site that don't sell anything for months and then start selling.
And because this is a highly competitive site with a lot of sellers on it your listings get burried fast. Some of the more successful sellers on this site will suggest listing several items through out the day so you will be on the front page of your catagory at different times of day, and because it moves so fast you will be listed on page 10 with in minutes.
I have spent many days, weeks and months researching the forums on etsy again in the business topics as I have a shop on there, so far I have only made four sales and this is after taking 100's of promoting ideas and implementing them in a daily routine of promoting my shop to get traffic and veiws of my items out of the millions of items listed on Etsy.
Here is just a small list of suggeted ideas on how to be a successful seller on Etsy.
Take great pictures.
Bring in customers from outside of etsy.
Pass out business cards ( never leave home with out them, give one to every one you meet, post them on bulletin boards and all sorts of other places)
If you make something you can wear, wear it out in public and if anyone shows interest give them a card and sell your self to them.
Blog about your crafts or art.
Join forums, groups, ect, where you are allowed to promote your shop do so.
Social networking sites like facebook and myspace, Make a page, Make friends.Send out information about your items.
Pay for advertising on other sites to your target market ( this is something else you will have to probably research well)
Hope you get picked by other artist and crafters to blog about you.
Make or buy promotional items to give away like pins, book marks ect, with your shop name and information.
Use your family and friends to help promote your shop.
Have excellent customer service.
These are to name just of the few things that are suggested that you do.
I am not writting this to discourage anyone from selling on this site. I just think that if you don't go into this blind that you may have a better chance at success and a small understading of what you may have to do to succeed.
