here's an ehow article on it.
honestly, this is the kind of thing I've been contemplating for earning extra money for our adoption. the other thing I'm going to look into is selling cotton candy at festivals, fairs, etc. that could even be done in the same fashion as a hotdog cart too -- how many places sell cotton candy for the general (non theme park attending) public during spring/summer?
i know that many people have raved about selling hotdogs at their yard sales, often bringing in more profit from those than the yardsale items themselves. my girl scout troop (years ago) did tons of hot dog stands, as they were quite high profit margin fundraisers (though the cotton candy was the highest profit margin at about $0.08-$0.09 production cost per bag).
The most obvious places to sell would be at fairs/festivals, but you should consider looking into making camp outside a home improvement / non-food store. There is a sausage/hot hoagie cart (I think Dominic's maybe?) outside the local Lowe's... the sheer amount of business that guy does is INSANE! The stand is always busy, whether with store employees or hard working customers that are on a quick break running to grab some more material from the store and can grab a quick hot lunch while they're there.
