Could you support yourself and your family if you had to rely only on your WAH job?

Our WAH job does support us. But, because we are just starting out on our own, I can tell you that if something happened to my DH, I would not be able to continue the business. Nor would I want too. That sounds bad, but we're so small scale that his life insurance policy would hold us over, assuming we are talking death. If we were talking disability, well, I haven't a clue what we would do.

Now I know another couple, who are in the same business as us, and (while I do not know their financial standing) I can pretty guess that they would be in so much trouble if something happened to the husband in that relationship. They assumed a massive debt to start their program. On the other hand, they have a beautiful home, but where we need one kid to pay the bills, they need at least four and they charge almost double what we do. So I guess you take the good with the bad.

No, and I wouldn't want to. I enjoy teaching, but it's hard work. I like just doing a couple afternoons a week.

WAH jobs are difficult to find that could support a family, they tend to be low paying. WAH business where you keep all the profit, more likely. I can't make enough to support the family through piano teaching alone yet (but come close), but can cover a huge chunk of the bills. I often wonder why I got an advanced degree for this? lol. But, I enjoy the kids (and adults) who are excited to be here, they make my day. My business has a steady cash flow at least, that is important.

Once our kids are on their own, it may be enough to support us. I've added piano tuning & repair back into the mix to provide another stream of income (my former career). It may be possible to support the family with the combination of the two, time will tell.

Dh's wah business (executive recruiter) was supporting us well until the recent recession, but that goes with the business. The next 5 years or so will probably feel like the Titanic, but those who ride out the storm usually have great years coming out of a recession. Who knows these days?, with all the changes, whether there will be a recovery in this field. In the meantime, we just keep plugging away, but it no longer is able to support a family. There is no steady cash flow with this commission-based business (which is a huge problem). Real estate agents are much in the same boat.
