An important question to ask yourself?

I do. Now currently I am a co-business owner with my DH. But, as I have said before, this is HIS baby. I'd like my own.

I wanted my own business since about age 12. My father became self employed around that time, and us kids would work on putting together mass mailings, etc. (this was pre-computer age). I thought it was so much fun at the time, I'd probably hate it now!

I had decided to be a piano teacher by age 14, and planned it all out, including college. Piano teachers are traditionally self-employed though, so it was nothing new. I did not know I would also become a piano technician, that was an accident that grew out of living in a very rural area with no piano technicians around. So, I taught myself through correspondence school.

No, not really.

Hubby and I like the steady income and benefits. I like going at home at night knowing that someone else has to deal with the headaches.

Now-a-days, though, many employeed jobs are very much like being self-employed. Case in point ... the job I have now. I'm paid nearly nothing (and I'm restricted from creating a side income until my term is up), a lot of my expenses are out of my own pocket and I think about my work 24/7.

Hubby's job is also very much like being self-employed. His job follows him wherever he lives because, as long as he is near an airport, he travels to his customers. Expenses go on one or two credit cards which we are responsible to pay and the company re-imburses us. If hubby doesn't get his expense reports in (and argue with accounting about what they are going to pay), then we don't get the money but the bill is due anyway. He might as well be sending out invoices. But health insurance? For us that is such a huge issue being self-paid for health insurance would be nearly impossible. Hubby did have one co-worker who went to self-employeed status and he is suffering horribly.

I also like the more simplified tax reporting that comes with being an employee.

But hubby wants to quit what he is doing and move to a more rural area. He thinks to do that we need to start our own business. If our house was paid off, I'd feel more comfortable about it.

No, but it would be nice to run a B&B when I am old - but then I also want to travel after retiring.

Yes, I have always wanted my own business. I like doing things my own way. Before I left my last job to be a SAHM, I was pretty unhappy because I was forced to do things one way when I knew it would be better to do it my way. And I can not STAND someone always looking over my shoulder.
