That is something I always thought about doing. I love to bake and I am really good at it. My moms best friend used to always ask me when I was gonna make her some cookies. Maybe someday

I could cater to working moms who want a home cooked meal brought to their door. But I can't do it that way here.

Plus, you probably have to have business insurance in case someone gets sick. I mean what if you use bad eggs (not knowing it) or contaminated flour or something (who knows wil all of these recalls these days!). Or what if a child is allergic to eggs or peanutbutter and they get really hurt. Someone could sue you! We live in a crazy world, I would just make sure that you have your own back covered!

Things used to be alot simpler didn't they?
I live in central pa- and i have contacted the "correct people" before it was last year- cause i was thinking of making my pb eggs and coconut eggs to sell- you need a seperate kitchen from your personal one with a seperate entrance.. all of which i have- but i never did it-
I just sold the candy eggs off the break room table.... made 56 dollars

totally bummed after reading this. It sounded like so much fun and then after reading this I realized I wouldn't be able to do this. Also the idea of if someone got sick from something really got me to thinking. I still would so love to sell some cookies and such though at the holidays - wish DH could take them in to work but I don't think I could ask that of him - also no idea if he would even be allowed to do so. Very helpful thread.

How do you ladies cope with the product labelling? Or allergy alerts on your baked goods?

Hi Queenboxtop,

I must tell you that it is true you do need to check with the health department and the state Department of Agriculture that regulates who can sell at Farmer's Markets. There are currently 11 states that allow home-based bakers to sell their baked goods directly to the public. The states are: Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Vermont, along with numerous counties across the United States. In fact, in North Carolina you can bake cakes, pies, cookies, make candy, dried mixes, blend spices (e.g. Jerk rubs) and some sauces (e.g. barbecue and hot sauces). You might want to Google "how to operate a home-based bakery" and see what comes up.
