Hello, ladies. I really need to supplement our income. I have tried 2 direct sales companies and I have failed at them. I also had a home based embroidery business, but my heart wasn't in it, so I have quit that. I am a former teacher and would love to come up with something related to education. I had looked at the idea thread and didn't see responses to some of the questions people had about work at home jobs for teachers. If anyone has any good job possibilities for a former teacher I would sure appreciate hearing about them. Thanks in advance!

Tutoring of course. SAT, ACT prep work. Consulting high schoolers and their parents about choices AFTER high school. A lot of parents can be completely clueless about college life and the steps that their child can take or even should be taking and all too often the kid themselves don't even have a clue to begin with.

I agree with Melsb. I think it takes a special person to teach, and even more of a special person to be able to teach children. Let's just say that it's a good thing I didn't make that my career as I thought I'd do. And I would LOVE to have someone special help my son with his homework and help him learn more by making it fun. My only issue is how much tutors charge. Some not only are doing it for extra money, but doing it for a LOT of extra money. I simply can't pay what they are charging.

BUT...there are those who can and will.

One other thought - the corporate world needs you. Training is one area where budget cuts happen. They could really use someone on a consultative basis, where you would put together a program or the lessons and hand it off to their trainer or come in and train on your own. You could even learn an industry you enjoy and specialize in training within that industry. Talk with some HR departments and even some friends who work for some medium to large companies. Once again, it takes someone special to keep the attention of adults who really don't want to be there and would rather be getting their work done.

If you have a master's degree you could teach college level classes. Yes it may not be at home (some do have online courses) - but I teach at the college level for some accelerated programs. This means that they are about 5 weeks long - 4 hours - one night a week. I accept/turn down when it fits our schedule. The money can be decent for the amount of work put into it.

How about something like Kindermusic or one of those Bear Building businesses?

I know alot of teachers that really like the Usborne books sales or Scolastic sales as well. though I'm not sure what kind of money they make.

If you are musically inclined, I'd suggest Musikgarten or Kindermusik.... you can find lots of info about each on their websites.

Are you computer saavy? A lot of times libraries or adult education centers need people to teach a computer class an hour or two a week.

You could assist people with resumes and cover letters. So many people need help with that. High school and college students need people to edit papers too.

Thank you so much for all of the great ideas. Keep them coming. I am going to look into these a little further. I have done some checking today on online tutoring opportunities. I do like the idea of editing papers, awells. I have 4 children, one of which is a 6 month old, so I am also looking first into options that don't require me to leave home or have an absolutely quiet house. Thanks again.

I am not a licensed teacher but went through a course to be a tutor and for the time that I did it I loved it. The company that I worked for left our area but I think you should look into something like this. College preparation helped is also great as mentioned above.

I teach college courses online through a local university (I love being able to interact with my students at all hours of the day). I also teach in the classroom, but only as it suits my schedule.
