When you are meeting someone new, and feeling out a friendship, how far into it do you go before you mention your business? Do you find them backing away if you mention it too soon?

I've had a few instances where someone will try to give me their business card 10 minutes into the conversation or mention they have a business and I should have a party. I back right away.

What do you do to show that you want a friendship and not just out to cultivate business? (My former director in the skin care I sold tried to tell me to look at everyone I met as a customer and that I shouldn't give time to anyone who wasn't....needless to say, she didn't have many true friends.)
