Has anyone ever thought of photography as something you can do at home? I've always had an interest in photography and I enjoy taking pictures of my kids. I do know a few sahms that have turned this hobby into a terrific carreer and are doing awesome at it.

I think photography has taken off so much that the other day when I was reading my gymbohaven newsletter, there was a banner for a site dedicated to making just the idea a reality! It was a paid site though so I didn't join, but I thought to myself, what a GREAT idea.

Does anyone else do photography and think about doing it semi professionally?

My dh's cousin does this. She does pretty well at it as they just built her a studio. I think that with digital photography and computer programs that it has become much easier for people to do with little professional training.

We have never used her. I was told that when she first started that the sessions lasted over an hour. Well, she lives about an hour away from us and taking kids and getting them to cooperate for that long is just crazy. I am sure that she has gotten better... She also has her pictures printed thru a company that I think the prices are well, pricey.

I think if you have a talent for it, go for it. Try it as a hobby, first, though.

We recently had a newer member post in this forum, trying to feel out others' success.

I wish I had visual talent. I stink at taking pictures!

I think you could make it go if you had a good eye plus knowledge of photoshop techniques, too. Digital photography has made it really easy for moms to get good snapshots of kids - so you'd have to do something to stand out. I think you'd really have to find your niche; whether that means you're good at candid shots, good at manipulating them in Photoshop afterwards, or good at antique-looking studio shots. The best kind of advertising for this is word out mouth - so you could get your business started with relatively low start up costs.

I have thought of this many times
Photography and art was my major in college (never finished since I had all A'a in photo classes but never had to go just do my work and I didnt feel I was get enough criticism to learn what to work on.)

my dh keeps bugging me to do some with it but he wont let me spend the money on the equipment I would need my film camera that would work for this is not working and I wouldneed a new camera that is not a point and shoot. anyhow he things any camera over 75$ is too much soo I gave up on the dream of being a photographer, (my original goal was to be a photojournalist)

I know of a couple of people that started out photographing their kids' playgroup friends and then branched out. It never worked for me as I always ended up just giving people the photos!

Why couldn't you just work with your $75 camera till you could afford a better one?? I bet if you really worked and offered to take pics of whatever, you would eventually get your name out there. Alot of people I know have nothing more than a Point and shoot and still take a million pics. Once you get them into photoshop, you can do anything with them. There is even a free photoshop program I found one day, I think its called Elements or express or something like that, and its very similar to the high priced software that you buy. Try it out!

You could check with local daycares and see about taking pics of eack kid, sorta like doing school pics. Offer to give the daycare a percentage of costs. offer a few package sizes to keep it simple. just a kid sized bench or chair and potted plant in a nice outside location could be a nice backdrop. or one of my fave poses of dd and ds is the 2 of them laying down looking up head to head, with all of dd's hair all around soo cute, and all iI used was a white sheet under them. I think simple pics have a more dramatic effect
