I have submitted a few things to magazines and none have been picked up. I even got a few "sweet" rejection letters with tips for improvement. It is a VERY saturated business, so it takes persistance and self esteem! I am working on a few bigger peices and hoping to break in some day! My goal is by time I'm 30 to have SOMETHING published, so I still have 6 years. Good luck to all you writers out there!! Don't think of other writers as competion, just write what's in your heart and try not to compare your style to others.

If you're interested in writing as a career, it might help to become a subject matter expert in a particular field. It's not always exciting, but it's a great way to carve out a career working from home.

I am a technology writer and it's pretty lucrative in terms of freelancing. Granted, I spent several years working in the field, but if you worked in a particular area prior to becoming a SAHM (finance, technology, etc.), you might consider writing for trade publications or for a company doing case studies, newsletters, website writing, etc.

It's tough now because my three kids are all under 6, but I am able to make a good living writing part time, and should be able to make a terrific salary when they're all in school.

I have friends who have been successful in freelancing for larger regional papers but they do it for love and not money. Newspapers don't seem to pay that well but in general, companies and trade magazines do.

You should also check out the 2009 Writer's Market book (just search for Writer's Market on Amazon) or check out their website at Writer's Market - Where & How To Sell What You Write. The Writer's Market lists different publications that publish material written by freelancers and gives contact info and marketing advice as well.

Best of luck!

If your interested in writing for online jobs then try googling freelancing jobs or freelance gigs. There are lots of sites and articles that list sites to get jobs from. I wouldn't pay to join a site though. There are plenty of free sites out there.

I've always wanted to be a freelance writer so I took the dive when I decided to be a SAHM. The local paper is a great way to get yourself published. My local weekly community paper takes submissions. I contacted the editor, submitted some samples and was given a test gig. I now have a near weekly assignment with the community paper which is great because it's helping me build my portfolio. Since it's a community paper, a lot of my assignments let me bring my DD with me during the interview portion which is great since I don't have to find a baby sitter and we both get out to meet the community.
